Not really obscure but the first Moby Grape lp is essential, named checked by everyone from Tom Waits, Beck and Robert Plant check them out. Totally out of place in 60's SF they were a band that didn't follow the times and play extended jams but 2/3 minute pop nuggets. And also if you can find it a solo record by leader Skip Spence, Oar is a haunting record that is the soundtrack to a nervous breakdown.

During his six months in Bellevue, Spence was diagnosed with schizophrenia.[11] On the day of his release, he drove a motorcycle, dressed in only his pajamas, directly to Nashville to record his only solo album, with no other musicians appearing on it, the now-classic psychedelic/folk album Oar (1969, Columbia Records)

Some of it sounds like Tom Waits/Nick Cave before Tom Waits and Nick Cave, most deffo a 3 or 4 AM record.
Could someone point me in the direction of kickass garage rock/soul/funk/psychedelic i.e that kind of left field vibe that 60s and 70s wonderfully capsured?
Cupz: do you know Nacht En Ontij by Boudewijn de Groot? Contrary to most of his other output (which is usually amazing as well), this record is very psychedelic and avant-garde. It contains one big epic called "Heksensabbath". Truly amazing lyrics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZRdgbMbmp4

I must say I have looked into boudewijn de groot. His album Picknick in particulair but I found his voice is way to...pom pom pom or something. Herman Van Veenísh, only less anoying. I'll check this Nacht en Ontij and give the man another chance though.

I must say I have looked into boudewijn de groot. His album Picknick in particulair but I found his voice is way to...pom pom pom or something. Herman Van Veenísh, only less anoying. I'll check this Nacht en Ontij and give the man another chance though.
I like both Picknick and Herman van Veen alot, but Nacht en Ontij is pretty different than that.

It always seem like you could get away with anything musically in the 60's/70's. I suppose that's true in a way now but experimentalism was much more popular - or certainly more in the public eye, back then.
