And here's a thread about books, movies, music, or products that you think deserve far more recognition than they ever get.

I'll get us started with a CD: Amon Tobin - Out from Out Where

The bass is just so huge - the canvas is just so full of noise and so expansive. It's as good as his best work IMO. And better than Foley Room, as far as I can reckon.

And a movie: M. Night Shyamalan's "Unbreakable"

Say what you will - and I understand why some hate him - this was an interesting and psychological movie with a great plot. As good or better than the Sixth Sense.

the band black tambourine. only made one album but it was fucking ace. should get more cred in the shoegaze scene.

the book night animals by bruce pascoe.

movie ghosts of the civil dead by john hillcoat.

i don't like to talk about unheard of shit like this and sound pretentious and indie and whatnot, but it's good stuff that people should appreciate.

tera melos, circa survive, the number 12 looks like you, paranoia agent.

melos are just a bit too spastic for most people to give them a fair chance, but they make some of the catchiest, most energetic, and beautiful music ever.

circa gets lumped in with the emo/hardcore scene, so they don't get taken too seriously. but they're really diverse, and much more original than their peers.

tntllu is overlooked because they are a grindcore/jazz fusion band, which is a bizarre combination that doesn't seem like it should work. but it does. they were really, really good.

paranoia agent is not a band, it's an anime. but it's the deepest, most thought-provoking cinema i've ever seen. up there with the wire, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, and spirited away at the top of my list.

Criminally underrated is a phrase that may as well have been invented for Oceansize. These guys have talent to burn. Rock that is progressive without the 'prog'. Check out their vid to 'Legal Teens' off their recent EP Home & Minor. Incredible.

EDIT: Music For A Nurse is possibly the best use of 8:17 you'll find on a Sunday morning. Seriously, anyone who loves anything from Mogwai to Soundgarden to Stars of the Lid should just adore these guys.

agreed! i've been a fan of oceansize for years. caught them at barfly in cardiff...i was amazed that there was only...75-100 people there? madness!

Agreed, it is a very powerful film, I saw it at a cinema when it came out in 1988.

dude, Effloresce (spelling?) was fucking MASSIVE. loved that album! i think i'm gonna put 'er on the iPod an' 'ave a listen to it tomorrow. they really are underrated.

Is there a bigger riff in the World than the one in 'Catalyst'? I'll never forget the first time I heard Oceansize ever, was watching them open a gig with that in London. Damn near blew my ears off.

Speaking of Stars of the Lid, has anyone listened to Bell Gardens, the new side project from Brian McBride of SOTL and Kenneth James Gibson (Furry Things, [a]pendics.shuffle)? You can listen to tracks at www.bellgardensmusic.com, and I picked up the EP at bandcamp. I've heard it compared to a Beach Boys/Phil Spector sound, and that's not too far off the mark. I liked it, but am curious what other Lid fans think.

Among aficionados of contemporary indie music like the majority on this board, it often seems to me that those listeners limit themselves solely to music that meets certain intellectual criteria, while metal, world music, classic rock and popular dance music remain criminally underrated.

I listen to anything that reflects my personality and identity.
