I've got an MD SPS-1 UW MKII, and I can't see or hear them using it. As neat a machine as it is, it just doesn't seem to fit. Ae have been using MD/Mono since Untilted. And that is blatant. Tracks like 90101-5l-l and bnc Castl sound like demo songs from the MD. And the fact they are spokesmen for the gear is a sign I think.oscillik wrote:as someone who has owned an Elektron Machinedrum, i can blatantly hear it on tracks from The Campfire Headphase
The Campfire Headphase sounds much less sampler based than Geogaddi, Music has the Right to Children and earlier. And is more straight loops, like Chromakey Dreamcoat, or one shot takes like mentioned in an interview.
Ultimately its about the samples you put into the unit. But the MD just doesn't handle samples the way that Boards of Canada sound like they use theirs. I've been trying to find the interview where they actually mention using Akai S1000's. Someone here would probably be better at finding that than me. But I will wager, judging from the the way The Campfire Headphase sounds, that a lot more computer based sampling was done. Real sounds in mind you, but the sound is much different than previous releases.
MD
Even with this demo, though possibly a technic Boards of Canada could have employed, doesn't seem to be along the same sound the workflow would suggest. (Interesting demo for those who own an MDUW.)

No facts behind my post, just my point of view based on what I hear.

They probably built their own, much like Roger Nichols did with WENDEL and WENDEL II for Steely Dan.

I actually remember reading an interview where Boards of Canada actually mentioned using Akai S1000s and Drawmer filters. I remember this clearly. I just can't for the life of me remember which interview. But it was after Music Has the Right to Children.
Anyone?
