Synthetrix Plays The Music Of Boards Of Canada

Greetings musical friends.
I humbly submit for your audio edification, my latest experiment,
"Synthetrix Plays The Music Of Boards Of Canada."
I had started out just doing of few of these covers on a whim and then decided to do enough of them for an album of sorts.
Like most of you here, I have been influenced and inspired by the music of the Scottish brothers Sandison. My aim was to assemble more than just strict cover versions of their work, but reinterpretations done in styles that reflected both the original song and the Synthetrix style. Some are pretty straight forward and others are quite removed from the original version.
I hope you will enjoy this free download of the album and any feedback you may care to share would be welcome.

Ambitious and consistently stylish series of covers! I particularly like Open The Light, 5-9-78 (wonderful) and Whitewater. Well done man!

Man, I completely forgot about Whitewater. BOC Maxima is not on my IPod for some reason. I really like your cover of it.

Do you think this project was good musical exercise for you? I've thought of doing a few covers just to get a good feel for how good melodies and harmonies flow and are put together. I've played nothing but original music for the past few years and that probably isn't good.

It definitely was a good exercise. I had done covers and mixes of other people's work in the past, but never quite to this extent. One of the things that I had to deal with was that a lot of BOC's songs are built around a sample. I wanted to recreate the music that is in that sample rather than just use the sample itself. In "Sixtyniner", I recorded the man speaking sample with my own voice and then processed it heavily to make it not really sound so much like me.
It was fun to deconstruct what they did and get a better understanding of what makes their songs tick.

I originally used these samples in the song "Wonder" from my Operation Happiness album, Which was inspired by "From one source.." but ultimately left them off of the song due to the copyright issues. I decided to use them for this release though and hopefully no lawyers will be contacting me with regard to them.

As long as you don't make money out of it you don't have to worry about that at all.

OK well I am not too worried about it I guess. They are from the video "Good Night Moon and Other Sleepytime Tales" which was put out by HBO/Sony in 1999. It's a children's video based on the famous book for kids.

You can't Creative Commons it! It's a derivative of BoC's work! Please don't just use the license because that's what the cool kids do. The fact that you've used the NoDerivs attribute is particularly annoying:

"No Derivative Works — You may not alter, transform, or build upon this work."

Can you see what's wrong with that? And why it's fucking rude?

For the sake of the BoC, yourself and the Creative Commons organisation (yes, even them; they're not going to want to see the license being slapped on stuff incorrectly because it makes a mockery of the whole concept) remove it. Keep the content up but remove that license.
