(BoC effect) newer generations

Post by Distant Nebulus »

as younger generations discover Boards of Canada, do you think that their music will have the same effect on them as it does the generations who grew up in the 60's, 70's, 80's and even 90's. I am not trying to say that you had to have grown up at a certain time, to understand BoC, but would those warm-nostalgic-fuzzy memories still happen to the generation that grew up in the 2000's. with the digital photography and video, it seems like that aspect would be missing for them. I, for instance am reminded of old PBS tv shows like sesame street and 3,2,1 contact. maybe the natural memories might be triggered, such as my memories of driving to my grandmothers house every friday evening and watching the electrical pylons go by.

sorry, i kinda ramble, but im just curious what your opinion would be towards this.

I feel like I "get" their music, though I probably don't. And I still find them nostalgic, though I was born in 1997..... :?

good, point, I understand , you dont have to "Get" their music to enjoy it or be a fan, just wondering about the nostalgic part, for especially the those born in the 2000s.

Even before I reached the age that I could have nostalgic memories about my childhood at all (I was born in 1985 btw), I already experienced nostalgic feelings when I viewed or heard bits about the hippie era. Warm, fuzzy art and entertainment can not only be experienced as nostalgic by those who were familiar with it in their childhood, but it rather has an organic and peaceful quality to it which can be picked up and perceived as such by people born in whatever decade.

NO WAI! I was born in 1997!

I get them, and it has a big effect on me because my grandfather had a lot of old films and stuff around his house when I was little. I used to watch these really old VHS copies of old films and I thought it was the best thing ever. so, BOC does have an effect on me.

Now, what would be really nostalgic is them using the Dial-up sound in one of their songs. That's really nostalgic for me, IMO.

I find that dial up sound nostalgic aswell! Also, the whole vhs thing goes for me and my grandma.

It's all about your environment, I think... What you're surrounded with as a child, teen, adult. I was born in '87 and VHS was a pretty big thing in my family; We didn't get a dvd player until about 2004 lol, we've always been pretty poor. I think any generation will be able to relate to their music.. It's what that generation experiences individually that will define their relationship with BoC's wonderful tunes.

There really isn't any specific thing to 'get'. Everyone hears music in their own way.
So whatever you 'get' out of the music, so long as it is enjoyable, then, GREAT!

It's good music. If you're hearing the goodness, YOU GOT IT! Get it?

For me BoC was a starter for getting me into this kind of electronic music. So for me it's always kind of nostalgic knowing that BoC is where I started.

So that is my way of 'getting' BoC :)

??? No no no! Just dig the music, thats all. There is no right or wrong way to perceive it.
Get what you get out of it. Thats all.
Example: I go way back to the old vignettes on CBC done by the NFB. I can hear the influence, but the music doesn't take me back to that. I get a whole other experience I'm not gonna bother sharing in a forum. But there is no nostalgia in there. If so, little bits and pieces. There are many other things I hear and get out of it. It should be personal.

Well put. And I'm from 1986, and I get bands like Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplane etc. It sparks a nostalgic feeling in me. Although that may be because my mother raised me on it. Pink Floyd most of all. Why should BoC be any different?

I feel like the 70s nostalgia thing as a primary motif of boc is an over simplification of the boc effect made by fans struggling to define feelings beyond verbal comprehension..retro is what you get out of t-shirts with cassette tapes on them, thats not boc. There's something atemporal going on with their music.

Their music transforms the present into a beautiful, deep longing. Their music fucks with the space-time matrix more than any other band, that's why their so rad. My experiences with boc are the most beautiful of my life but they weren't associative of the 70s as much as they were actively engaging my current thoughts and emotions and making them deeper and more poignant. When I listen to boc im not nostalgiac of childhood im nostalgiac of what i experienced and continue to experience listening to x song.

a complete wash over of modality is what it is. i feel like to categorize them so carelessly as a band that makes you reflect on the 70s is an insult to their creativity and ones own creativity.

In a dream I had there was this very old musical machine in a sterile modern environment. It just had this orgasmic vibe to it.

If you explain the magic and science of a vinyl recording to a 6 year old he's going to be amazed and mystified. Its this magic we all revel in...no matter what age.

Nostalgia about a time that someone hasn't experienced has really had me thinking for the past 20 minutes.

I guess some of the voices sound old-timey *when lava pours out near the sea surface*, but its hard to imagine what a kid born right now would think in 15 or so years (when one can really start to appreciate music) would imagine.

Totally agree.

The first time I listened to BoC sincerely, I was transported to somewhere ELSE. Somewhere I'd never been before, plus places I myself, me specifically, had already been. It was way, way bigger than "this sounds like 70's stuff". The best part about BoC will always be that way.

And, Synasthesia, your ego-crippling humility is cute <3 but Twoism loves you, make no mistake, we respect your musical ability and we hope you never leave us. We all hope you won't get so down on yourself although we understand the compulsion to do so. I believe I speak for many of us when I say this.

I think this thread can be answered indirectly by many of the other threads that roam this forum and the "This Random Sound" forum.

Think about all the different kinds of responses to the whole "What does 'x' song make you feel?" These questions are usually asked about BoC songs on this forum, and that helps this theory hold true. The music itself triggers one's own nostalgic feelings toward earlier times. That way, no matter what era the listener was born in, they can still feel it.

Everyone generally responds with their own experiences or ideas, and that's how the magic happens!

For instance, I just so happen to be listening to Whitewater right now, and it makes me think of watching an old children's program at a day-care service in a very cold, remote area of the country. And hiking with my family as a toddler (although i didn't do too much hiking, as I was a toddler) in that same remote part.

Every song is different for every listener. Especially when you think about when they were born. When they do 'get it', and feel that nostalgia and yearning for previous times, they all feel it differently.

But they all feel it.

TL;DR: a kid of the new millenium might not feel magic related to vinyl and cassettes when he listens to whitewater, but he may feel magic related to the first time he turned on his new xbox 360 with his family. either way, he'll still feel that tickling feeling in his body and that sense of yearning in his heart many years later.

I was born in 85 and i get that 1990s nostalgia feeling whenever I listen to MHTRTC. Since I remember a lot of the early/late 80s things too do to reruns of tv shows and hand me downs from my older brothers and uncles, I can understand and feel a lot of their early sounds too of course. I think everyone feels something when listening to them, whether you're 13 or 31, BoC pulls it right out of you.
