Music Appreciation help

Post by Cupz »

I lost my appreciation to music.
Somehow it doesn't interest me at all anymore. I used to discover new artists every day, and listen to music full time... but now the only music that I can listen to is my own.
Its starting to get seriously depressing as music is my life and soul.

Did anyone have any experience with this phenomena? Is there a light at the end of this dark depressing tunnel?

Had it for some time aswell. Was far to busy with a lot of things. Only thing that helped me was really stop listening for a while.. Take a moment to finish what I was working on. And after some time of silence I got back to listening old records I loved, and slowly I started looking for new music again.

Dude, that sucks. I've never been through that luckily. I certainly hope you get through this soon. I say that because I can only imagine what that would be like. I have such a strong connection to the music I listen to. So get well soon Cupz (musically that is).

Yeah man, been there more than once. It's cyclical though. I find I lose interest sometimes and other things - movies, books, socialising, etc - take over for a while. Then, usually when I least expect it, something sparks the interest again. A new tune heard somwhere, an old tune not heard in years, whatever.

Don't panic! Don't force it either though. It'll come good when it's ready. In the meantime, use it as an opportunity to do other things.

I think its for two reasons.
The first is people seem to have less of an attention span these days and are constantly groping for new things. In your case music. With music being so readily available on the net, people DL albums listen then look for the next quick fix to satisfy their desire. Then, you burn out for a bit.
Spend more time with the tunes. Back in the day of tapes and records, you HAD to spend time with the albums you had. Because thats all you could afford. And people were more selective. Rather than DLing everything they could get their hands on, people carefully picked the albums they bought due to monetary constraints. Only buying their favorites.
Secondly, I hate to say it. You're getting older. Tastes change. You go through shifts, hear things differently. Associate tunes differently to different things.

BUT, on a positive note, when this happens, its a temporary phase. And you will hear things differently and probably find yourself going back to old favorites with a new perspective. Or getting into different kinds of music. So hang in there, it passes and look forward to the old becoming new to you again or discovering something you like in music you never gave much attention to before.

Somethings you will never go back to though. They just get played out.

Happenned to me, and I ain't that old.

I think that, for me at least, it's a confidence thing.
I occasionnaly get sick of anything related to music, to the point where I want to throw my controllers and computer out the window, as I'm overwhelmed by the feeling my music won't ever matter much, and by the impression that other people do what I do at a level I feel I'm never gonna reach.
It is quite terrible, as, like you, music is my life and soul, but, fortunately, the music comes back.

I've only ever had that happen with videogames. :/

My solution was to take a little break from it, then I went back and replayed the games that made me fall in love with games in the first place.

You'll be fine, take this as an opportunity to do something else with your time.

I'm with you on the listening to your own music more than anything else, but I'm finding that I listen to fewer bands with more intent. For the past two or three years I've found one or two artists every six months that I obsess over and obtain their whole discography, study their live sets, read their interviews and then I move on. I don't really actively look for new bands outside of Last.FMs recommended listening station.
