Judging by some YouTube viewer numbers Lô Borges isn't that obscure, at least in Brazil, but his self-titled 1972 album has just been re-released, and I think it's gorgeous.

Its hard to judge what classes as obscure but here are a few that the average man in the street probably wouldnt know of

I can hear a lot of Campfire Headphase era BOC and Bibio on this track by John Fahey

If you dont know this guy then please read his wiki entry. Has to be the unluckiest man in the history of music. Brilliant though

Im ashamed to say that halfway through reading his story, I started finding it quite funny just how unlucky he was. For those who have ever watched The Fat Show, he reminded me of the unlucky old guy on there who's cathphrase is "Oh Bugger"

Any road, some great suggestions on here. Im currently trying to get my top 10 albums from each year from 1965-2009 and there are some gems on here that I'll have to checjk out before compiling my list.

i saw silver apples two years back in cardiff, great gig! is Simeon gigging with a drummer now then?

Would King Crimson be obscure? Not too many people my age (mid 20s)know about them. They are more like early 70s and early 80s though.

Also:

Blow by Blow from Jeff Beck. Very highly rated and well done. But it just seems like nobody ever heard of it or him until you go "well, he was in the Yardbirds" then if you are lucky they actually recognize that band name. Of course the general public knows of Eric Clapton and Page but Jeff Beck not so much.

No, it was just him. Great gig and I spoke to him before the set. Incidentally, he was on Freak Zone on 6music at the weekend, 6 days left to listen (in UK, don't know about elsewhere)

I dunno if this fits in the pointed out genre..
But I always have been a great sucker for Tangerine Dream & Klaus Schulze, and especially their early work from the late 60's & 70's. Most records bring back so many memories as my father has a lot of their vinyl records which I listened to with my sister when we were younger.
My father also grew my visual perspective in music as he told great stories while listening to records of TD that he thought fit to the music. Anyway, I still experience these visuals when I listen to TD which gives it an extra dimension.
If you don't know TD you should start with, Force Majeure, Phaedra, Rubycum, and Klause Schulze's 'Mirage' is great too.
