I don't think this hypothetical die hard SQP fan would expect him to only make textbook idm. Beep Street rules but he's evolved beyond that.

It's just ignorance. I haven't heard the part that one guy is referencing but jazz is really cool. I like the bebop style the most. If you know Cowboy Bebop, it was influenced by that style.

Oh man! I love Cowboy Bebop. The music in that series was awesome.

Or... it might just be that I know quite a lot about jazz and know what I'm talking about. I'd suggest you might note the irony in saying that you haven't even heard what I was referring to immediately after broaching the topic of ignorance.

Enlighten yourself - the track in question is 'Frisco Wave'. Listen to that and try telling me that it isn't Squarepusher's take on smooth jazz.

Sorry to ressurect this thread from the dead. I just bought the vinyl of this piece at my local record shop on a whim, and I must say, I feel bad for not giving it a shot sooner. I think that his little lite-brite mask + hoodie gimmick was distracting from what is some pretty good music, actually. And that video was hardly representative of the whole work. I certainly wouldn't call it jazz, and I wouldn't pan it (as Pitchfork did) as a blatant Daft Punk rip off either. Honestly, I think they were too taken in by the visuals in that video and from the cover, and wrote off the whole thing without paying attention to the actual music.

Honestly, I've tired of some of Squarepusher's twiddling and spazzing out, but this album has none of that. It's almost as if someone was there to watch him before he went all Marty-McFly with the teeny-tiny frets of his bass guitar.

I recommend this album. And I don't get why Warp didn't stand behind this more with the promotion. It's like they back off of their works when it doesn't get the Pitchfork seal-of-hipster-oval. That's pretty much how it seems with Seefeel, too. I mean, we could do a study of these things: how long will the Warp main page keep a blurb about an album vs. what did Pitchfork have to say about it. If positive from Pitchfork (above 6.5), then more than two weeks. If less positive, then two weeks or less. That's my prediction. But here's another point: Warp frequently posts snipets of reviews or even links to reviews. That's proof that they care about what these "experts" think of their records. But why the fuck does Warp care about who-says-what about their albums? Have they forgotten their original mission-statement? The point was to be somewhat skewed and challenging to what some damn "authorities" of music say. I can recall, e.g., reviews of the R.D. James album slamming it for being too much on the line between shit and genius. If the current administration at Warp were in control, would they not stand behind that album if it were released today and Pitchfork said that (and gave it a bullshit numerical grade of 4.5)?
