Some BoC information (fakes and info on old stuff)

Post by aperson »

Old Tunes Vol. 2.2 is a compilation of tracks from Old Tunes Vol. 1 & 2 I believe... It is not an official release, and I grabbed it off of an nmp3s FTP.

'Boards of Canada Unknown Demo Tape' are the first 13 tracks of 'Old Tunes Vol.1'

Three Old releases have been leaked, they are:
'A Few Old Tunes'
'Old Tunes Vol. 1'
'Old Tunes Vol. 2'

These are mislabelled to hell, note that A Few Old Tunes is just a Few Old Tunes, not A Few Old Tunes 1 or A Few Old Tunes Vol. 1...

I have these properly listed and tagged in my 'A Few Old Tunes,' 'Old Tunes Vol. 1' and 'Old Tunes Vol. 2' folders as 'aperson' on slsk. Any other forms are INCORRECT. Also note that there was a fake Old Tunes Vol. 2 going around for awhile. All I can remember about it was that it featured Unknown Track 12 & Unknown Track 13 from my 'Unknown & Unconfirmed' folder. Those 2 tracks were posted on the BoC yahoo groups and they are clips of Disc 2 Track 12 and Disc 1 Track 13 on Old Tunes Vol. 1.

Old Tunes Vol. 1 can also be called 'Remixes and Rarities' or '35 track boards of canada demo'

The A Few Old Tunes backside jpg was leaked and circulated widely around the internet, I do not know the source.
The A Few Old Tunes casette pictures and Old Tunes Vol. 2 pictures and casette have an interesting story. A person on watmm posted asking how much AFOT and Old Tunes Vol. 2 could get on ebay and said he had a copy of them. People demand proof, and amazingly posted these pictures. Oh, and Joyrex locked and deleted the thread because he didn't want to piss off cob and hexagonsun :)

The 3 Tracks from Closes Vol. 1 and the Catalog 3 track were randomly posted on the yahoo groups. The source is unknown and so is the legitimacy, no one has been able to prove anything about these tracks.

I talked to someone who claims to know the person that leaked AFOT, he said that these 4 tracks are fake...

The Duffy, Circle, and Wouldn't You Like to be Free clips are entirely legitimate. They were posted on the old, old boards of canada site circa 1999.
The 'godever' mp3 is actually track 14 on Old Tunes Vol. 1. It has NOT been confirmed to actually be godever

Notes on Old Tunes Vol. 1:
Posted on yahoo BoC group:

here are a few curiosities / interesting things / pointers:
cd1 track 2 - 'she is p' from a few old tunes
cd1 track 5 - 'finity' from a few old tunes
cd1 track 6 - REALLY lush track, a snippet from it is sampled in
'seven forty seven' on boardsofcanada.com (although i think you can
only really hear it by loading the shockwave file into winamp and
playing the indiviadual samples from that), has slightly arabic
sounding flourishes hear and there
cd1 track 7 - reversed guitars with live drums, flanging effects and
such.. reminds me a bit of acid mothers temple, or neu! sped up
rather.. ahem
cd1 track 8 - same drums as 'june 9th', sped up [though without being
pitched up]
cd1 track 11 - that little synthy bit at the end of sixtyten and one
of the tracks from twoism
cd1 track 12 - has the same vocal samples as aquarius version 3
cd1 track 13 - remember those low quality 'track 12' and 'track 13'
tracks which were posted on here quite a while ago? this is track
13... :) [track 12 however, isn't track 12, but another track on cd2]
cd1 track 14 - that track which was floating around on audiogalaxy
years ago as 'godever' or 'closes vol. 1' which sounded quite 80s
synth-pop ish
cd1 track 15 - 'i will get it tattooed' from a few old tunes
cd2 track 1 - sounds quite like a different version of 'buckie high'
from old tunes vol. 2
cd2 track 3 - 'house of a'binadab'
cd2 track 4 - this track is GEORGEOUS, it's practically live band
sounding, with shimmery guitars which remind me a bit of 'lose my
breath' by my bloody valentine, and a nice bassline. nice crunchy
messed about with drums too, before a steadier live drum beat comes
in. ace.
cd2 track 10 - slightly different version of 'the smallest weird
number' from geogaddi
cd2 track 12 - yeah, its the other track that got posted here long ago..
cd2 track 13 - 'davie addison' from a few old tunes
cd2 track 17 - the other little interlude that was on both twoism and
music has the right to children.

Heh, I stumbled upon half of these tracks.
Also note that some of the Old Tunes Vol. 2 tracks got the title of the preceding track, for example: 'Sir Prancelot Brainfire' is called 'David came to Mahana'im'.

Another fake is a track called 'Alpha and Omega (live)' which is just Alpha and Omega slowed down.

There still are loads of other fakes, though, but you made a nice and extensive list.

I have recently found and downloaded mp3s of tracks claiming to be the album "Hooper Bay". They are within 2 secs of the lengths listed in Fred-e's discograhy - ie: these are NOT the short excerpts commonly found on Soulseek.

The tracks sound completely different to the "fake" excerpts, but I'm still not sure if they are BOC. One track "Circle" has a wispy girly vocal during the second half. I can't make out many of the words but I hear "you flow so fast, you little ???" and some other phrases.

Anyone else come across these or have any idea what they may be? I'm sceptical, obviously.

I just downloaded this album from a friend. Well the first track. I recognized that the first track was mum - slow bicycle and didn't download the rest.

It's a fake, sorry

I've also recently ran across a hooper bay with incorrect times. Track 1, 2, 3, 5, are various mislabelled BoC tracks. I don't know what track 4 is but it isn't BoC. And track 6 is Autechre's Play At Weissensee Against I'm Gluck

Anyone heard of a track mis-labeld "Over the Horizon Radar?" (I had made a new thread, but I thought I'd ask here). It's not the one on Geogaddi.

It sounds to me very BoC... but maybe too "hip-hoppish"?

It's around 1:21 in length, and not on any of the BoC albums I've come across.

Upload the track somewhere so we can hear it or give me your slsk name and I'll snag it from you and check it out.

Hey guys. I am a BOC fan from British Columbia, Canada. I own all of BOC's major releases on CD (save some of the artist albums with one BOC remix present) and am in the process of collecting up MP3 of their vinyl only and/or unoffically released tracks.

I have run across a track labelled Echo The Sun which is 05:40 long and predominately features chirping insect noises. It is actually quite nice and if it isn't the work of BOC, then indeed it is the work of a talented ambient musician.
I also have a version of Everything You Do Is A Balloon labelled as the Gescom Mix. It is 10:32 long and features no attempt at remixing the actual song (This is the same version of EYDIAB that appears on the Hi Scores EP). However, after EYDIAB ends, the remainder of the track length is taken up an excerpt from the aforementioned Echo The Sun track.

Can anyone confirm whether or not this Echo The Sun track might be a mislabelled Gescom track or otherwise?

I also have a 07:01 copy of Seward Leaf purportedly from Hooper Bay. It features a synth that sounds like acoustic guitars and an occasional sample of something being dropped into water; I have a feeling this might be one of those Mum tracks wrongly attributed to Hooper Bay.

Has anyone else found these or have any pertinant info on them?
I make music as Sweguno.

The Echo The Sun track is fake (Gescom)
The ...Balloon track is also 'fake' (just EYDIAB with some noise put before and after it)
The Seward Leaf track is fake ('Slow Bicycle' from Múm indeed)

The track with the insect noises you mention is infact: Gescom - Stoop [Hidden Track] (6:20) and the next song is called Jega - Tamad [Hidden Track] 2:30.
Both are taken from the amazing sampler Skampler. And like the tracktitle indicate they are hidden and not on the actual tracklist.
The total track is 15:12, this is EYDIAB together with Gescom and Jega.

See if this works.

It's obviously not the Geogaddi track, and was mislabeled by someone, but I was wondering who it is...

Another problem identifying a track; I have two mp3s of track 15 ('I Will Get It Tatooed' as it's known on 'A Few Old Tunes') from 'Old Tunes Vol. 1'. One of them is 01:05 as it is listed on Fredd-E's site, while the other contains the 01:05 track and then continues with a warbly, wah-wah synth in the same style and quality as other 'Old Tunes' tracks. This copy ultimately ends up being 01:58 long.

I'm just wondering which one is the official one as they both sound exactly the same (up until the 01:05 mark) and legit. Someone else must have encountered this.
