So just to clarify on some fakes...?

Post by theoktitus »

So here's my question really basically:
All the tracks (for instance, 5d) that can be found online are fakes?
Does anyone have any idea WHO in fact, then, made these fakes?
I'm well familiar with the fakes that were Marumari, CiM, etc.

Love the Boards of Canada, I mean they are my life, really. Extensive years of research - well I'm sure you all know how it is.

Here's hoping for 2011! If we get more than 1 track all year I'll be happy enough to wait for 2012.

I think that "5D" track you mentioned may not be a fake, I'll check into that.

If the 5d you mean is this one...

As far as I'm aware that's very real.

This is from the 'Closes vol 1' - which is Semi-fake - in that it is a compilation of old BoC tracks from the legitimate Old Tunes tapes/35 Random tracks, but not the original Closes (though who knows, maybe some of those tracks originated from Closes or some of the early tapes?)

That fake Closes also contains a few non-legitimate tracks, such as a track by Dave from 2001 labelled as 'Focus on the Spiral' (which is actually a very good tune!) and a fan cover of Roygbiv (which is awful)

I've actually kept this fake in my library purely because it's pretty well-compiled and I like the order in which the tunes are placed, i think it works well.

That track he is talking about is indeed featured on the Random 35 Tracks Tape.

More specifically Audiotrack 06 (side A).

That's the very same audio file as in in this youtube clip:

It sounds very very boc to me. It's hard not to believe these tracks haven't been made by Boards of Canada. I'm a believer! :D

I was going to say... I'm no spokesperson, but my ears do all the telling for me.

that's most defiantly a BoC Track. :)

Right, see I mean that was my question... It really sounds to be BoC...
I see someone said it was on the 35 track untitled tape, that makes sense to me.
So it is BoC, it may or may not be the "5D" on Closes, but it is their original music. Nice.

i recon most of the 35 track random tape material is from the pre-twoism releases such as closes, hooper bay, play by numbers, acid memories. we just dont know which is which. if that is really '5d' from closes then thats cool...

I've wondered this - i don't suppose anyone has tried to tie up the track times between early release and Random tape for any similarities? (I think the answer to that is probably 'yes, and nothing matched')

I wish there was some way to get the 35 track tape in completion. Does anyone know if there's a CD or anything available anywhere?
Obviously it would have to be a fan copy, but I NEED it!

thats right. not many track times match. but the random tracks are kind of merged together and fade in and out so its possible they are incomplete or partial mixes. the 'house of abin'adab' is actually a different part of the same song from 'Old Tunes 2'. 'she is p' & 'i will get it tattooed' have different track times to the ones on 'Old Tunes 1'. so its likely to be the same for all the other track times on the random tape making it difficult to find any similarities..

It would be cool if MDG helped here...

And how about Chameleon, definitely a fake? I see it for sale on Amazon as a BoC MP3?

I mentioned this in another thread, but what about those short excerpts of Duffy, Wouldn't You Like to be Free, and Circle? They do not appear in their entire forms on any of the Old Tunes tapes. So, assuming that those excerpts are legit, my guess is that BoC's early EPs and Closes are completely different from what we've heard on Old Tunes/35 Track Tape.

On a side note: aren't there real versions of Helios Sound, Close3, and Focus on the Spiral floating around? I have those three tracks and in the past it was said on here that they were legit. Not too sure though. Something seems kinda "un-BoC" about them. They're not the same ones from the Closes fake and they're also not from any of the Old Tunes. I've been curious about them for awhile. Apparently they originally came from a trusted source? :S

sithlord999, I'm pretty sure the tracks you're thinking of were confirmed fakes.
