Is there any BoC songs that you just don't get?

Iced Cooly is a fantastic song. Second favorite song on that EP behind Melissa Juice. If you are talking about Beatnik then yeah a case could probably be made for that.

One thing I dont get is that when comparing original Happy Cycling to the MHTRTC Happy Cycling is that why did they change the happy theme to melancholy but didn't change the name to "Melancholic/Sad Cycling".

As I was checking the story of that track from the bocpages I stumbled upon this:

"[Mark S] - Many have suspected the title as being a reference to Albert Hofmann's trip on LSD known as Bicycle Day. "

So came up with an idea that maybe someone had an melancholic LSD-trip and they decided to do an alternate version of that old track but did not want to change the original name.

I don't like Rue The World. It's too repetitive and predictable. They're too good for it. If I was going to give a cd of boc music to someone who has never listened to boc I'd definitely leave that one off.

I can see how a lot of people could like Dayvan Cowboy but for whatever reason I was never into it and I still continue to skip it.

I love the melody of Red Moss but I hate how busy it is. It's one of their songs that disappoints me.

Aquarius I liked for awhile then disliked, and now currently like again. It's too charming for me to dislike.

Peacock Tail and Pete Standing Alone grew on me later on. I used to skip those songs for some reason when I was first getting into boc.

It's amazing to me how out of all of the music of theirs that's been released there's not many songs at all that I dislike as you can tell. This is why I worship them.

I agree about rue the whirl, but i still like the song very much....that whole stretch starting from roygbiv to the end of pete standing is maybe the best stretch of the album and i just let that play through almost daily.

Fantastic song?... Meh, not in my opinion. For beatnick, THAT is a track I love. It's a shame it only last like 30 seconds. I made a looped version to enjoy the beat for at least 2-3 min.

I don't see it as melancholy, but more like a simple ride you could easily enjoy. Maybe i'm misunderstanding most of their stuff, since I don't understand most of your choices, mates XD

You know there's a few songs I go back and forth on. Zoetrope was the first, when I first heard it I thought it was far too repetitive and went nowhere. Now I really like it.
Roygbiv I think gets a little old for me just cause it sounds so mainstream, whereas for me Dayvan Cowboy I think is really good.
I really love all of their music, and I hate saying there are songs I skip!

There was a time when that whole EP just sort of passed right by me unnoticed. I had to take the time to stop and appreciate it.

I think I can probably say without fear of contradiction that almost all of BoC's stuff is "hard" to get. Not that it doesn't come naturally, but that those pieces of music which don't come naturally to a person (it's rare when it ALL comes naturally to someone in particular) to appreciate, you can't just snap into it. If you like one of their tracks, bingo, you're done. If you don't, well, it's more than just a matter of hearing it in the right mood.

Subset mentioned Skyliner and Left Side Drive and I have to agree - both of those tracks took time, time and repeated listens, for me to appreciate in any capacity. I knew they were BoC, and I knew they were pieces of music skillfully crafted by loving hands, and I knew they were unique and singular in a way that lots of music isn't. But I still felt they were just "off" and not right. But after having made that assessment, and having over much time shed the expectations I had had for them, listening to them in a "new" light, as it were - that is, something closer to hearing them "for the first time" without some prior idea of what BoC are "all about" beforehand - I came to appreciate them in their own light.

As fans, we tend to take for granted our well-rounded comprehension and studied understanding of the public end of the BoC machination. It's something we get, because we do it a lot, just as if we went bowling every weekday. Sometimes a little jolt of an alternate perspective is all it takes to bring these tracks into a sense of appreciation they deserve. Everything sits in context; nothing exists in a vacuum. BoC is not only context-enriched itself, but informed by the contexts in which we experience it as music. Too often we forget that the entirety of the mental slate can be wiped wholly clean at times out of our control, and we can encounter familiar stimuli in unfamiliar circumstances and come to assimilate it into our mental worlds in utterly alien ways.

It may well be that I come to listen to Basefree someday in some bizarre, unforeseen scenario in which the music hits me outside of a context in which I am prepared to sit and listen to some music, and instead I let the sound take me on a mental journey which I find more rewarding and enriching than I ever could've had I just sat down to take in some music for diversion.

then again, it's hard to listen to any one song on Geogaddi.
i mean, sure, it's hard to listen to just one of any BoC songs.. but especially on Geogaddi.
they're all such dark pieces, and they take you on such a dark and demented ride.. it'd be difficult to take out just one..

Staying away from old tunes...

interested to hear some sort of debate on tunes that you don't quite understand or don't like for any reason. It's very hard for me, I love just about everything they've done, but if I was to say one song, it would be:

There really aren't any tracks I actually dislike but I do have a tendency to skip certain ones, Rue the Whirl is probably the one I've skipped the most, It certainly is not a bad song but sometimes I just don't have the right feeling to listen to it. The most annoying part of it is that I keep taking my earphones of just to see whether the birds chirping are in the song or nature.

If I were to include Old Tunes, Light, Clear Hair and P.C. would be at the very top, Not good use of audio samples in my opinion, they make me feel awkward . Devil, Peace-Tony-Devil, Energy Warning, Blockbusters and even Magic Window I find more listenable.

I feel this too - I love certain tracks on their own - Olson, Aquarius, Happy Cycling and ROYGBIV - but the rest of the album holds relatively little appeal to me. Same with Twoism.

Ah yes, Turquise Hexagon Sun is great. It's not to say it's not a great album, its just that it's not my fave.
Tracks like 'An Eagle in your Mind', 'Sixtyten' and 'Rue the Whirl' don't do to me what 'Peacock tail', 'Dawn Chorus' and 'Amo Bishop Roden' do ... I guess I just prefer the quieter, more melodic side of BOC.
