What TheSilenceEchoes said pretty neatly matches what I've heard many other girls who would ascribe the characteristics she talked about to themselves have said as well. All guys whine about how they don't get the girls they want. Jocks come home at 3 in the morning drunk and bitching about how their whore girlfriends on the cheerleading team didn't give them blowjobs (true experience). Nerds get drunk alone and whine about how everyone is superficial and there are no deep sensitive girls who understand them. When each of these groups actually starts dating the girls they say they want, they usually drive them away again by failing to be as appreciative as they swore they'd be when they were lonely.

Me, I'm... not very confident I'll be dating anyone soon. Girls who want to listen to ambient records and cuddle by candlelight AND who dig on furfags like me are especially few and far between. I'd count myself blessed if I met someone like that.

It's a common fallacy that lovers have to be the same. Sure you need to have certain common interests but being each others opposites keeps it much more challenging in my opinion. It's good to hold a mirror up to someone's face, instead of seing it from the same perception.
A healthy balance in either art, music or movies is a must, or else there will be a lot of arguing I guess.
My wife doesn't like music like I do.. she does let me play what I want. Respect and letting one do what he likes is very important I think.

Not sure of this really adds to your message TheSilenceEchoes but I do think having the same interest shouldn't be such a hot topic.

i never said lovers have to be the same or share the exact same taste, interests etc. My, would that be boring! I for me need to learn a lot of new stuff, new point of views and to be challenged.
But it is also important in my opinion to be on the same wavelength, so you understand each other and feel connected. That is a must for me.
But, whether lovers should be the same or not was not the point of my post.
I just wanted to take the liberty to challenge you guys to think about something. Like Turquoise70 said, a lot of guys just aren't appreciative when they do get what they want. Most of the time their indifference and disrespect that starts the moment they have won the girl for themselves, will eventually drive their girlfriends away, heartbroken. Why is that?

Honestly, I want the deep, interesting girl. I want to meet someone who has no interest in "changing" who I am, who will bring out the best in me and will make me want to strive to reach my full potential. And at the same time, I want to be the person who brings out the best in her and makes her want to strive to reach her full potential.

My brief dabblings in psychology would bring me to the conclusion that everyone puts their "best foot forward" when they meet someone... they go out of their way to try to prove to the girl (and themselves, I'm sure) that they are the "one", but if they aren't, then over time they will slip back into who they really are, and maybe, that isn't a pretty sight?

Hopeless optimism would have us believe that there really is "the one" out there... is this true? I have no idea, but you have to make sure that past experiences don't put you in a mindset that sabotages that "perfect" relationship if it comes along.

By the way, can I ask you a question? You say "the moment they have won the girl" but what is winning?

I've always been under the impression that in relationships there is no "winning"... now, I don't mean this in a negative, bitter way... but what I mean is; isn't there an underlying thought (fear is too strong a word for most people, I think) similar to "I've got the girl of my dreams. Let's not fuck this up." Am I wrong here?

But, if victories do exist, then isn't there a lot more of them in a relationship than just "get the girl!" ? If so, then is it possible that a lot of people just don't realise/ understand that?

Just my 2 cents on the matter. Remember, this is coming from a 17 year old who only has an outsider's perspective on things, to take it with a grain of salt, I guess.

Seriously, if you want someone who "knows when to shut up" you really need to think about what you want in a relationship, if you want one at all. Relationships are all about communication and sharing and if you don't value that then you're not going to make it very far.

My Chinese friend has said that I'm kinda like a Chinese man born in a white man's body :lol:

We both agree that our standards for women are just smart and not too talky, which is really what I meant by "knows when to shut up".

I say preferably Chinese because a Chinese woman is probably more likely to support me disciplining my child when necessary. (my friend can back me up on this stuff)

I won't deny I'm racist, we all are at least a little.

I'd say that being exactly the same as a couple can go both ways, I could go on and on about BoC music or my viewpoints on life and such if someone was willing to listen and agree. It's really all about being open minded.
