What we're doing is making a track each. Based on samples of the track before yours, which are given to you by the person before. Once you're done with your track, you take the dry or processed samples you used, or the melodies/phrases you recorded, and pass that on to the next person in the chain.
The idea is that each piece of music is linked to the one before it. The key to it is that you need to respond to the ideas in the previous one. Then you can either be constructive; building upon what they did - or destructive; mangling the samples so they sound nothing like the originals. It's entirely up to you as long as it fits in with "lo-fi, low-key, and warmth". Based on that you could do anything from folk music to Eno/SotL style ambient.

Yes. You can add to it, or you can completely destroy it. You can play the melody with a different instrument. You can make the melody have the same rhythm as the drums. You can do whatever you like, it's just based on the samples of the track before. The emphasis is on experimentation with samples, but you can add your own stuff for sure. And go wild. that way nobody will have heard the project in full up until the very end
Maybe you could bend the notes in the track before up and down to yours. Say if the melody went C-A-F#-D#, you could move notes one at a time on every 8th note or whichever, to eventually get to D-A-F-G# or something, which would have the same effect as a fade-in except nicer, imho. Well, judging by Techboy's entry to OOT 4 as underwater - the song is called 'The Big Mill', and his other stuff - I don't think you have any problems with melodics.
