To those who contributed to the compilations, or anyone who makes music, what software/hardware do you guys use?

Personally I have an MPD18 with Ableton Live and Reason 5.

Go go go

I might purchase a MIDI keyboard.. possibly the M-Audio 49?

Ableton Live, Keyrig 49, BCR2000, and a Launchpad. Also, turntable and Yamaha DX21.

Reason 5 and Record 1.5.

Pretty nearly all my music is written and produced entirely in Reason. (And anything that isn't is Record.)

It's the most enjoyable music software I've ever worked with, and it's powerful as hell. I'm glad its undeserved negative reputation seems to be waning in recent years.

I use an M-Audio Keystation 61es for midi input, a pair of M-Audio StudioPro 4s (aka DX4s) and a pair of Sony MDR-something-or-other headphones for monitoring. I mostly work on a 2ghz iMac from 2006; Reason and Record both run like a dream on it.

Hardware -- Old keyboard, guitar, KAOSS pad, mp3 player for recording and whatever I can find that makes noises

Still learning, but music production is way fun.

Software: Reaper, CoolEdit Pro, Chainer, Audjoo Helix, Arturia Minimoog, Amplitube, Linplug Albine and Organ, FXpansion Guru & Geist, Fabfilter Pro, NAI B4, U-He Zebra, Recycle, Paulstretch, Goldwave, Rapture

Hard: microKorg, nanoKorg, M-Audio ProKeys 88, guitar, olympus recorder + stereo fieldmic, various effect pedals, RockBand-drums ( midi controlled )..and gonna buy an Korg 707 soon ! + Help from band friends.

Gonna try and make an whole album next summer.

"crank dat" by soulja boy was written in a demo of FL Studio using only only the built in loop packs. not endorsing the song, just sayin.

This is too true. One can almost have too much stuff or at least be distracted by too many options. I think I read that Wisp was using a crap laptop and FL. People on the pro end diss FL but his work sounds great, I like Mux Mool too who swears by Reason. I think Toro y moi uses reason too.

Between me and my cousin we have a home studio that most people would love to have and while we are trained musicians I can't say I've written anything as good as either of my previous examples.

Know your gear, Know your software, find something that works for you and gives you joy to play with. And the things that don't have great interfaces/workflow are sometimes worth the headache because of the sound you can get later. My Kurzweil comes to mind.

Use Logic for composing, arranging, structuring, layering. I also put effects on the tracks that I know are going to stay on the track. The song is then imported into Pro Tools for intricate editing, further layering, further arranging, and mixing. Microphone is used to record everything and anything, headphones are used for accurate monitoring because I do not have monitors.

On my Windows computer I have Adobe Auditioning for quick edits of .WAV files. Beyond that, nothing.

The eKeys controller was something for $20 that doesn't really provide anything beyond playing the note I want to be played. It's nice when I get tired of banging on my Macbook Keyboard.

hmm I wonder what prompted him to switch. I know he used Reason 4, Fostex x-12 4-track cassette deck, and primarily a Shure SM57 for Causers of This. I think Reason, being a closed system would be a bit of a headache to get external sounds mixed in, and it would seem getting those things into FL would just be easier.

I haven't used Reason much though, I usually rewire it when I do so I haven't had to consider those logistics.

Circuit Bent Sr-16 Drum Machine & a Moog Concertmate synth. I use LMMS in terms of software, lately.

I also just picked up Ableton recently but haven't figured it all out yet. Shit's hard.

And here's the kicker: I haven't made a single track with them.
Because I'm running windows 98 on a crappy pentium 3. I make all my music from within FLStudio. I sometimes use Logic on my Mom's computer (I'm only 19, not 32 or something). And I used to use Reason 3 on my old iMac that died. I like macs better but I'm just stuck with a windows for the time being.
