Wasn't this guy just fucking amazing? For a long time i went off hip-hop, because most of the stuff i was hearing was generic, soulless, and just damn shit. Then i discovered this guy, after listening to Donuts, i was amazed! I was like ''finally, some decent hip-hop!'' Damn! His music is full of soulfulness, i fucking love it. His latest posthumous album release, Jay Stay Paid is fine listen. My favorite track has to be Milk Money. The album was mixed like a radio show by his idol Pete Rock.

I was browsing through YouTube, searched for J Dilla interview (because for some weird reason, every artist/band i like, i always search for video interviews) Anyway, i found J Dilla talkin' about Madlib - (the fuck is he wearing on his head? haha)

One day i wanna buy an MPC and make some soulful beats. Dilla is an inspiration.

Intro (Alternate Instrumental) on Ruff Draft is probably my favorite beat of all time. I wish he had fleshed it out into a full tune.

Donuts is an absolute masterpiece. His other work isn't too shabby either...
Dilla is one of the greatest if not the greatest.

I've only recently been led to Dilla by frequent comments by the current LA crowd (Brainfeeder posse, mainly) and yeah... f*kin ace! haven't checked out Donuts yet but i've got 'The Shining' which has some awesome instrumentals... you can really hear alot of these new electro/beats are trickling off the edges of a Dilla-umbrella of inspiration in the smooth waxy LA lava-lamp sky...

I remember first listening to Raise It Up on Fantastic, Vol. 2 and falling in love with the beat.

Climax (Instrumental) is definitely a tune. I can't help but think of all the beautiful women, of life's past and present, who have granted me an intimate tour of their every peak and valley.

but then listen to Donuts again

Time: Donut of the Heart might be my favorite track from the album. Also love how he re-used his "So Far to Go" beat in "Bye." Perfectly mingles sensuality, death and longing. Lot's of subtle (vocal) samples, like BoC

"By the late summer of 2005, Dilla was bedridden in Cedars-Sinai hospital in LA, where Eazy-E and the Notorious B.I.G. had died. Although he was insured, the bills for his long hospital stays were huge, more than $200,000 each. He needed dialysis three times a week and that alone cost nearly $2,000 a session. Prescriptions could run to $2,000 a time. Specialists were more than $6,000 a week. But still Dilla worked. He had his studio moved into his room, determined to finish his latest album, despite the pain and discomfort. His mother would massage his hands when they became swollen and painful.

He released the album Donuts on his 32nd birthday, 7 February 2006. He died three days later, leaving two daughters, Ja'Mya, now nine and Paige, 11."

OK, so i listened to Donuts for the first time and I LOVE IT! Instrumental hip-hop is awesome, and this is definitely at the top of the list, right beside Company Flow's "Little Johnny from the Hospitul".

Great stuff.
