Gentleman losers

Post by jackobfryer »

Fans of Helios, Bibio, even Manual, check out the debut record by these Finnish boys (boc-esque siblings incidentally). Decayed mellotron mania. Love it.

What's a "good" band name?

I quite like the name Gentleman Losers actually. Purely subjective. Helios sounds quite cool as well but I guess the whole Hellenistic/Classical thing has been done to death now (see Aphex, 'actium', 'ptolemy' etc.).

This sounds like it could be really good, I love Helios and Manual. Is there anywhere I can listen to clips?

There are some clips here:

I downloaded the album, I'm listening to it now, and it's definitely one of the more interesting things I've heard this year. Cool stuff, thanks for the reccomendation.

Yeah sorry, I just felt that this wasn't a 'random sound' and that it overtly synched up with some key Boc ideas (decay, Basinski-esque aural sediment etc.). Also, I thought people might pay more attention if I put it on the main bit. Naughty.

There's a comparison to Vincent Gallo on Boomkat which I think was pretty accurate.. if you liked these samples, you guys should also check out his album "When"! Some nice tunes there, even if some might not like the man himself :)

not as dusty as Vincent Gallo. Sounds like Tortoise in a way and perhaps Do, Make, Say, Think, but it has it's own space. I like it. I will buy this. Thanks

I think the name Boards of Canada is beautiful... that's one of the things that attracted me most, even before hearing any of their music.

not too crazy about the losers; but damn there is a lot of great stuff on boomkat; easily findable thanks to the "customers who bought this, bought that" option

Gentlemen Losers is the most beautiful thing I've heard this year. Nothing groundbreaking or revolutionary but just absolutely nailed and so warm and grainy like sitting in an independant cinema and admiring the beautiful clicks when the optical film stock reveals a splice in the leader.

Someone mentioned they were a fan of bibio - interesting, kind of makes sense with the use of tape and super 8. Very tasteful stuff.
