Trans Canada and Highway Hypnosis

Highway hypnosis, also popularly known as driving without attention mode (DWAM) or white line fever, is a mental state in which a person can drive a truck or automobile great distances, responding to external events in the expected manner with no recollection of having consciously done so. In this state the driver's conscious mind is apparently fully focused elsewhere, with seemingly direct processing of the masses of information needed to drive safely. Highway hypnosis is just one manifestation of a relatively commonplace experience, where the conscious and unconscious minds appear to concentrate on different things.

Building on the theories of Ernest Hilgard (1986, 1992) that hypnosis is an altered state of awareness, some theorists hold that the consciousness can develop hypnotic dissociation. In the example of highway hypnosis, one stream of consciousness is driving the car while the other stream of consciousness is dealing with other matters. Amnesia can even develop for the dissociated consciousness that drove the automobile. The phenomenon is an example of automaticity in cognitive psychology.

Does this not sound like a description of the multi-layered sounds in Boards of Canada. BOC are like wizards , slight of hand, concentrate here while we do this over here.Anyway I hope people get what I mean. Also check out the link and see the picture the provided for the highway,pretty cool.

This is very interesting. My friends and I were on a road trip, and we stopped at Santa Rosa, New Mexico for the night. The following morning, I had driving duty. I can't really remember any driving!!! LOL! But apparently drive on I did. We listened to a bit of TCHP on the way there lol. Makes me wonder....

This reminds me of the feeling I've had before of being on a road that never ends, particularly late at night on highways with next to zero other cars passing by. I happened to be listening to Hi Scores during one of these moments, and it was very eerie.

This happens to me often as I drive a lot for work. Usually music induces it with what I call "driving songs". But there's nothing in the BoC catalog that does it for me. A good example of a great driving song is the Molly Hatchet song Dreams I'll Never See. On the more IDM side, Tha does it too. I have a few CDs with said driving songs on them.

It's fairly strange, when arriving to your destination and you snap out of it. Feels like you started the road trip minutes ago.

Had this happen many of times. I get it on the highway mainly. I'll get on the exit ramp and 15 miles down the highway I won't remember getting the ramp. Like holy shit, where did that time go and how am I already here. I guess that's why we should listen to amazing music while driving, it sucks you in. Not to mention the cell phone and listening to talk radio.

In that Ernest Hilgard an American psychologist famous in the 1950s for his research on hypnosis and hidden observer theory (described a classic test of how this hidden entity is part of our consciousness. He wrote of a blind student who was hypnotised and, while in a trance state, was told that he would become deaf. The suggestion was so strong that he failed to react to any form of noise, even large sounds next to his ear. Of course, he also failed to respond to any questions he was asked while in his trance state. The hypnotist was keen to discover if ‘‘anybody else’’ was able to hear. He quietly said to the student, ‘‘Perhaps there is some part of you that is hearing my voice and processing the information. If there is, I should like the index finger of your right hand to rise as a sign that this is the case’’(Hilgard, 1977, p. 186). The finger rose. At this, the student requested that he be brought out of the hypnotically-induced period of deafness. Just ideas really, not saying anything concrete about the connection between this and BOC just trying to stimulate conversation.

On a side note I bought "loveless" today, I had the downloaded mp3 but I thought no I'm gonna go and buy this album because its fucking awesome, and this is an album that reveals its true beauty more over time.
