Every now and then I'll be listening to some Boards Of Canada track that I've listened to a million times, and maybe I'm listening to it louder or something, but I hear something I never heard the many many times I listened to it before hand and I'll be like "Holy shit is that a guitar/voice/etc."

Basically, if you guys have experienced that as well, name some examples.

For me, I noticed many sections in Chromakey Dreamcoat where you can here people talking in the background, but it's not like you can make out any words.

Wildlife Analysis has guitar (or some stringlike instrument) way deep in the background.

Sequoia has so many more layers of synth lines and chords beyond what it seems like at first it's ridiculous. Same with the percussion in that track. One of the reasons it's probably my favorite BoC track.

What are some you guys have noticed?

funny you should post this thread

i've had geogaddi in my car playing for the past week. i was on the phone with my girlfriend the other day while driving home. after the call i hung up and turned my stereo back on, and heard a beat which i had never heard b4. the beat sounded great and was new to me, and then it clicked in my head that geogaddi had been playing.

the song that was playing was, the beach at redpoint(one of my favorites). anyway. when i had hung up the phone the song was about midway through, and i obviously didnt recognize or remember what i was listening to at first, so i picked up an entirely different beat to the song that i didnt realize was there. it was very cool.

- At around 2:23 of Music is Math, you can hear a conversation similar to that of Turquoise Hexagon Sun.

- All but the drums and the bird call in YCFTS appear to be in reverse.

- The opening tune in Smokes Quantity is a palindrome.

- both Julie and Candy and 1969 contain one similar percussion sample.

- The buzzing sound in The Beach At Redpoint is more audible when in reverse.

- You can hear a river when the drums die down in Pete Standing Alone.

- There is an ascending and descending tone in Triangles and Rhombuses.

The whooshy howlaround delay that's playing throughout the first half of Dayvan Cowboy is actually in reverse. You can hear it suddenly clear up and un-distort to almost reveal what it originally was in the last few seconds before the guitar comes in (when it sharply cuts off). Though you never get to hear it I'm reasonably sure it's one of the bits that's used in the Odd Nosdam mix or DC Bit.

i'm trying to think of other little ones now...how about the extra hi hats that come in at 3:12 on an eagle in your mind. the vocal sample in happy cycling (the moment i noticed this it frustrated me) i'm sure there are loads more, but the 'ta-dah' moments have pretty much worn off of late.

If I listen closely, around halfway through Julie and Candy there is a little kid saying "hey" on beat 3 every eight measures or something like that. awesome thread btw!

- If you listen really closely, you can hear that I Saw Drones and TDIITD overlap each other.

- The ghostly moan (the deeper one) in TDIITD is in reverse.

- Part of the main drum beat in Julie and Candy plays forward and reverse back to back.

This has got to be the coolest thread in the building. Thanks so much for starting it!

I just noticed on the front IABPOITC artwork (CD version) that the black area around the three boxes isn't entirely black but that there are little symmetrical lines that go up and down across the entire page, evenly spaced out, five times.

I felt the page to make sure it wasn't just damage to the paper because I bought it used. Pretty cool!

As far as audio details? There are far too many.

I just noticed that there is a weird rolling noise that comes in in the middle of the second and third beat of the track on "Kid for Today" and there are also some pretty prominent reversed brushed hi-hat sounds (I'm sure that's not what they are though).

Also, I never listened to the bassline of "'84 Pontiac Dream" that closely, so I thought that it was just one long drone of a note in each measure. However, they play the note two or three times a measure and have an interesting sharp cut off every eight measures or so.

There are two snares in "In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country" playing at the same time. One isn't really a snare so much as a hit. Or maybe it's one snare and the delay/reverb on the snare makes it sound like there are two things playing at one time?

I like that BoC make music that have so many layers to a track, so each time you listen to something, you hear something new.

I was listening to MHTRTC last night and after hundreds of listens I also heard the sound of a plane after the "I love you" section in "An Eagle in Your Mind" with the flute. Pretty cool!

ooh, i remember the first time i heard that. there are many certain sounds and 'themes' that appear in many boc tracks, planes being one of them. a lot of the hi hat rhythms are similar also. i really do miss the days of being completely immersed in their sound...i'm hoping the new album rekindles my love for them.

I think Basefree is like that for me. Actually, maybe all of Twoism. With what you're talking about, I think it's the same kind of experience when you listen to any of their albums or EPs on vinyl for the first time.
