Re: Peacock Tail; I guess it's horses for courses and what ever turns you on musically, to me it's from the same stable as Beck's remix.
But generally it is surprising the lack of melodies to be found on this album considering the lush remixing of late. Very strange. I'd be more than happy if it turned out to be a bloody good fake, but it really does sound like them. Although there really is a lack of sampled vocals which are predominant throughout their back catalogue including Old Tunes etc..
The whole thing is very pared down and quite minimalistic, which maybe a reaction against Geogaddi and wanting to move on.

Into The Rainbow Vein: Intro track. While its purpose is similar to 'Wildlife Analysis' and 'Ready letsgo', it's more like 'Dawn Chorus' or '1986 Summer Fires'. No 'clear' melody, pretty hazy.
Chromakey Dreamcoat: This is a great track. Slightly off-key guitar plays a simple tune, and a beat kicks in pretty quickly. Human background noises. There's a small separate track at the end, which reminds me of a tv show called 'colargol bear' somehow. Fifth best track.
Satellite Anthem Icarus: Similar to 'Last Walk Around Mirror Lake'. I don't like it at all. Too slow and ininspired. You've heard all of this before. Maybe if they put in an original sound or melody, but now, this sounds rather bland. Small separate Geogaddi-like melody at the end, not very special.
Peacock Tail: Reminds me of 'Aquarius', but without the hooks. Again, guitar-oriented. It builds up with cymbals and noises that seem to come from a school's playground.
Dayvan Cowboy: The most guitar-heaby track, and not a bad one. First part is a distorted guitar which plays a melody you've heard before from BoC. While the first part is actually pretty neat and ethereal, the second part is much better, although not very BoC - a violin kicks in, and drums are used exactly like in 'Peacock Tail'.
A Moment Of Clarity: Sounds like the mislabeled 'the color of the fire' track from the warp 10 live set, but without that lovely flute at the end. Not really special.
'84 Pontiac Dream: The '1969' of Campfire Headphase. You just have to hear it, it's one of the finest tracks on the record - but you'll forget it quickly. It ends in a disappointing guitar melody. Sixth best track.
Sherbert Head: Fucked-up and abstract short piece. Not bad, reminds me of various short BoC songs. The happy counterpart of 'Corsair'.
Oscar See Through Red Eye: Poppy track, and classic Boards Of Canada. The melody doesn't go anywhere focused, but the atmosphere in this is fantastic... a lot of small quirky noises and reversed things. Arguably the best work on this album.
Ataronchronon: It sounds like 'Gann', the sample on the boardsofcanada website. And it's not better. Forgettable.
Hey Saturday Sun: The guitars are back! This is an unoriginal track, but relaxing nevertheless. It just misses the 'Boards Of Canada magic™'. Atmosphere is exactly as the title implies, but less hazy as you might think.
Constants Are Changing: The 'Olson' or 'Over The Horizon Radar' of Campfire Headphase. Wonderful. Again, guitars, but now they're in the background. Did I say this is wonderful? Second best track.
Slow This Bird Down: Sounds like 'An Eagle In Your Mind', accompanied by a distorted record store alarm (you know, the off-tune alarm sound when you try to steal something). Rather uninteresting and a bit too long. Lush folky Bibio-ish ending.
Tears From The Compound Eye: I like this one, but I don't know why. The most sleepy-campfire-ish song.
Farewell Fire: An extended, melodious 'Corsair'. Excellent. Like a fire, it dies down after a few minutes and the ashes glow silently for the rest of the track. Third best.

...I won't give it an overall review (I need to listen to it more), but right now I can say that the album is worse than Geogaddi and ABPOITC, and on par with Music Has The Right To Children. The atmosphere is more Geogaddi, though. It could very well be a new My Bloody Valentine album in places.
It misses the catchy melodies and truly original pieces from the previous two albums, but the album gets away with it thanks to the constant claustrophobic, warm atmosphere.

I think this album is far more subtle than the previous ones. I like it- my only issue with it is that I can't figure out what to do with it other than sleep.
It really does lack a "1969" or an "Aquarius." And frankly, it lacks the gradeur of, say, their Broken Drum remix. This is not to say it's a bad album- there are some great tracks here-but it all seems too short and too little. Some of the best moments only a last about 10 seconds.

well, we'll have to agree to disagree but i have to say i dont know how the fuck you would think that. its really colourful, and when the guitar stops and comes back in at around
2:59 its like a slow cool breeze falling gently over you. beautiful track. the next best for me is '84 pontiac dream' that scratchy 7 note synth logo that comes in, along with the other crunchy swirls and muted sine tones...

dark conceptual undercurrent and references to religious iconography. the new album is 'just' good music, and thats all that matters to me.

My reasons for believing this "real" leak is not r
Hi everyone, I'm new here, but have been peeking around this forum for a few days, I'm an ardent BoC fan blah blah.
I've been taking a listen to the leak that everyone is concluding is real. Not the one with A Few Old Tunes on it but the one with the guitars, and the lush soundscapes that are so much like BoC and almost so fitting with Oscar See Through Red Eye...but in me and my friend's opinion (also a big Boards fan) they don't fit quite enough. Here's my own main reasons, a couple of them are very subjective but i think fair:
1. Listen to the rhythms on OSTRE and then the rhythms on the rest of the tracks...OSTRE has a significantly more complex rhythm. The rhythms on the rest of these tracks are so simple, compared with the complex ones you so often hear in BoC's work.
2. When I'm trying to fall asleep, the last thing I want to listen to is the Boards, because they always guarantee I'll be awake and aware. However, on my first listen of this leaked album in its enirety, I fell asleep half way through. Don't get me wrong, there's some lovely tracks on it, but there's too many tracks devoid of the "sinister" feel that's run through so much of their music, even the earliest stuff.
3. Lack of meaningful samples, and lack of samples altogether. The one sample in this album (in Chromakey) seems so random and too repetitive.
These are my three main reasons for my belief that the Boards will have something quite different from the leak we're all taking for granted as the real thing. Of course, I could be totally wrong, so many bands have had more mediocre work, but this just seems like too much of a regression and too slick, though there's some really lovely parts all the same (I find Hey Saturday Sun really infectious).

Where do I begin?
Personally, I think this album has shown how much Boards of Canada has evolved these long past 3 years. Even with extremely impressive music like both of their much-loved albums: MHTRTC and Geogaddi (plus past others), they continued on with creating an almost complete twist on their normal methods of creation all while still throwing in bits and pieces of their past in their songs without giving them an overwhelming presence.
Personally once more, I believe this album to be probably one of their greatest achievements in their lineup. After years of following a creditable method of music they switch it bravely and produce it without hesitation and base it upon one of their fundamental enjoyments: instruments. BOC have often talked about their love of guitars and other such instruments, even going so far as to include them in their songs and disorient them so much that they seem like completely electronically fabricated sounds.
I believe that one could even make the audacious assumption that in this album BOC is truly a bonafide teenage-run playing-in-your-parents-garage band. Striped of the electronic masks and clever beats, one could literally complete a classic guitar and drum album. Mixing this was probably a dream of BOCs. I mean, years of sneaking in instruments into your songs, you gotta build up a wanting to make a full-style one.
It seems as though that in this album, BOC almost sound like they're telling stories of their life. Take '84 Pontiac Dream. When I listened to it I got the visualization of someone in their Pontiac as they drive back lonely at night. And as they past the many houses and buildings that inhabit them, many paranormal or strange or even funny things are happening to them. Because of this, it leads them to wonder if they just dreamed it all the next morning. Maybe BOC are telling this of a trip (drug one) they had before well in some ones car. Indeed, BOC have talked also alot about psychedelics, saying that they "understand what it is like," and how "something extremely small in a song can be huge and minutes seem like hours," not to mention that 1984 would have placed each of the members of BOC at about 14 - 15 years old. This is literally a blasting ground of activity for experimentation with hallucinogenics and others.
But for you classicalists, The Campfire Headphase can also give you shivering nostalgic chills when you reach such songs as: Into The Rainbow Vein, Peacock Tail, and Ataronchronon. Each one of them seem to bring you back in time to the earlier albums and your earlier tracks you loved so much.
A firm difference I also noticed in this album was the almost abandoning of BOCs trademark method of creating an almost "rising action with chilled out intermissions." It was created by making two or more longer songs (4 - 6m) and following it with a probably 2 minute or under song. In The Campfire Headphase there only about 3 of these surrounded by longer songs. This is very small though, no need to pick them apart about this.
But all in all, I believe this to be one of my favorite alltime albums ever produced. Others will have, of course, differing opinions about this records but that is fine! Individuality is what makes the world a fun place. BOC are kings at that in the musical domain. It is funny, and sad, to be grading BoC, as previously I'd have said all their 'mature' material was the very definition of 10/10. Campfire headphase looks like it's going to be a horrible fall into mere mortality. Come on, there must be a bit of 'It'll grow on me...' built into a 7.5 rating. I don't think it's even that good.
I'm a little disappointed if the leak is real. it sounds pretty reasonable to think it's them. if it's a fake it's a damn well-put one.
