Bugger.

Read the title and for a fleeting moment, my hopes were raised. Then I realised it's just his new album

(just a little joke there Moby-fans. While he is the spawn of Satan, I'm actually quite calm in my loathing these days. My analyst says I'm doing much b-b-better...)

I loved Play and a lot of its b-sides, thought 18 was great for the most part other than a few absolutely reprehensible tracks. Hotel bored me to death with its bland pop nonsense but Hotel:Ambient made up for it. I haven't cared much for anything I've heard of his since, unfortunately. I might have to give some of this a listen though.

Play is arguably what got me interested in electronic music. I was 10 or 11 years old and picked it up on a whim, actually won it at some boardwalk game by the beach. I had grown up listening to a huge variety of music from my parents, but hearing all the styles and sounds he covered there, all on one album, and then discovering it was produced by one guy at his apartment, blew my young mind.

Haha @ Mexicola.

This album actually reminds me a lot of Play, 18, and Last Night. To me, those three albums are perfection in terms of electronic music. This one is like the depressant version of those. Lots of warm synths, really thought out melodies. Highly recommend it.

I'm with you on Hotel. It's the only Moby album I don't like, but Hotel: Ambient is gorgeous.

I've never understood why he is so universally hated. Is it his music or his personality? To me, his music has always been ace (especially his string samples & pads. NO ONE'S STRINGS sound as authentic and emotional as Moby's). He is in my top 10 musically, but I can see how he himself could rub someone the wrong way.

You make me feel old esselfortium... I bought Play when I went to Amsterdam after seing Moby live at the Drum Rhythmn festival in 2000. To me Play was some sort of proof to non-electronica people in my surounding that Electronic muscians do more than just hitting and twisting random knobs.

All the music that is coming from his website until now sound quite alright.

Play was one of those peculiar albums that consisted of good electronic music and sample work that appealed to a universal audience, the only reason I'd even heard of the album was because my parents listened to it! I bought 18 when it first came out when I was on holiday in France and really liked it at the time, but from what I remember it sounded like Play b-sides, tried to do the same thing but just couldn't quite capture the same magic. I sort of lost interest after then, everything I've heard since has just sounded mediocre at best, but it would be cool if he came back with something I found worthwhile listening!

I'm playing 18 at the moment...

I was aware of Moby as a friend of mine at school was heavily into early 90s 'rave' music and he had some early Moby albums. At the time I was a music snob and only liked a little classical (very early teens), then along came The Prodigy and The Shamen etc and my tastes/attitudes changed and I became a fan of electronic music.

The thing with Play was that every track was eventually used in advertising or in a commerical...I got the album on release day, before it went global, then everyone sort of knew about it. I got a little fed up in the end as each track was in someway being played on TV.

I have felt that his music since Play has been a variation of that album. Don't get me wrong I do like each album since, but feel that they sort of live in the shadow of Play

I will be picking up Destroyed...I liked the EP he released on his website a few months ago.

I remember hearing "My Weakness" on the X-Files in an episode where he was looking for his sister. I believe it was season 7. There were ghosts of children playing in a graveyard at night or something. Quite amazing. My favorite thing by him for sure. Actually made me cry.

I don't like everything he's done, but he has the a typical sound in a few tracks; Natural Blues, In my heart, why does my heart feel so bad, porcelain and in this world.

Those tracks for me are the best tracks Moby has ever made, and they remain so darn beautiful, I could listen to them every day, but for some weird reason I'm not doing so.

Dragging those tracks into my WMP right now, need to hear them.

no love for Everything is Wrong? it's by far my favorite Moby album. i have much, much love for that record. and Animal Rights has some really good ambient tracks. i hated Play and everything he's put out since then (aside from the ambient side of Hotel). but for some reason, i still haven't gave up on the guy.

Destroyed is leaked. i guess i'll d/l it and see how terrible it is.

EDIT: i could have swore there was already a Moby thread... oh well.

Moby is awful. I USED to like him when Play came out. But his music is just so weak, it like ALMOST gets good but it always lets you down.
And another thing: He's really the only electronic musician who is a household name. But he in no way deserves that kind of recognition. Why not Aphex Twin? Why not Ae? Or even BoC? or Underworld?
Aphex and Underworld surely could have that kind of appeal.

In This Thread: People pretending not to understand why their neighbors/parents/friends/favorite film directors would prefer songs that sound like "Porcelain" or "God Moving Over The Face Of The Water" over ones that sound like "Telephasic Workshop" or "Sixtyten".

Seriously. I thought we were better than this.

I'm not a fan of Moby but I don't get all the hate that gets thrown his way.

Moby Dick

(I realise that is a book about a whale, but there is no point blubbering about it)

Sorry about the pun by the way, but I remain unswerving regarding my stance on Moby.
Also to the list of 'bewilderingly successful musical non-entities' could be:

Lady Gaga (why do people buy her records - why do radio-stations subject us to repeated torture
by playing her soulless plasti-pop?)

Tiny Tempah (Hip-Hop was invented in the 1980s, it was really good then! Now look what's
happened!)

Arctic Monkeys (When you have brilliant and original bands on Domino like Pram, why are these
guys hailed as anything other than a bad pub-rock band? Go figure....)

Oasis (we have a saying in England that you can't 'polish a turd'. Well, it didn't stop these guys
buffing away regardless of their superior mediocrity.)

Jay-Z (The only thing I can say about the performance at Glastonbury as well as everything else
he has done is "ding-dong spackaloid!")

Feel free to add some more if you are feeling as bitter as I am about not being able to make a living wage out of your own music whilst inscrutably empty piffle commands 7 figure earnings for the likes of the above mentioned!

Yes, I could listen to the stream directly from his website, I'm sure. I could also rub my naked eye with a bhut jolokia chilli pepper - I don't think I will though.
