I've used macs since the late 90s. but a little over a year ago, my mac book took a shit on me and I couldn't afford a new one. So I bought a Toshiba Satellite L505 Windows 7 64 bit. 4 gigs ram... don't remember nothing much else, but I do the exact same thing on this that I did with my macs.

Only thing now is that the fan goes off pretty much lately and it shuts down sometimes. I need to take it in to get fixed.

I use a duo core Imac 24" with 4 gs of ram 2.9 ghz and a MBP duo core 2.9 ghz and 4 gigs of ram. Love the idea of the new quad core MBP's though. I've worked on both platforms. my cousin just picked up a blazing fast pc for dirt cheap from a 2nd hand electronics store. Speed wise it beats both my macs.

Then i got a whole line of vintage computers from the early 80's... in upwards of 10 of them, and some other laptops that still work, but I consider them dead. The might as well be.

So the last of my computer parts arrived today. My video card, the ASUS Nvidia GTX 570 CUII, is soooo huge that I'm either gonna have to buy a new case, or mod the one I recently bought by cutting some of the metal out. It's a whopping 11.5" long, and takes up 3 of the PCI slots. It's an absolute monster. I got it because it runs really quiet and keeps really cool. Plus it was overclocked a tiny bit.
So I have to see if my old man has the right tools to mod the case. I hope he does, cause it's a really nice case. It's a Cooler Master Scout. Anyways, I'm exited to put this beast together.

So I modded my Cooler Master Scout case so the huge ass videocard can fit inside. I then put everything together. (The CPU Cooler is the Cooler Master V8 and is huge and a pig to put together) I installed Windows 7 this morning. Now I'm coming to twoism on my new PC, which is humming at a very low whisper of a sound. I couldn't be happier with my new PC.

i'm gonna be buying and assembling a new computer here shortly (planning on buying parts within next two weeks, actually! gonna clean up this computer, transfer necessary files (games, music, etc.) then set this one up in my mom's office back home late christmas eve's night as a little surprise for her (and to replace her dinosaur!))

how do these parts sound? budget isn't REALLY a factor (willing to spend anywhere up to maybe 1400), but i still don't want to be too extravagant

this all sound good? room for improvement? spot incompatibilities that i've overlooked?

Sorry fujee, but I'm assuming 2 years later, your question no longer requires an answer?

I'm couldn't find a build thread, so I'm using this one--it's close enough. It looks like several people here have experience building computers, and I have a few questions. I would like some advice on a build I'm putting together.

The most-taxing purpose of the build will be Adobe CS, particularly Premiere and AE. I'm not really a gamer. Right now, I'm rendering 400 frame 1080p DSLR timelapses and short .mov files on my old i3 laptop, and it's painful. I can't watch anything in real time, even if it renders first. I know this is obviously because I'm trying to do something "intense" with shitty power/video.

My goal is to be able to be able to get good playback/previews of at least 1080p sequences/files. Fast renders are a plus, but most final renders will be done at night anyway.

My main concern is about bottlenecking somewhere in the drive setup though--
What I'm thinking is to put apps/OS on the SSD (could I get away with 128GB?!), and my final exports/backups could be to my big external drives. The problem is the in-between here during the actualy editing process...

Since the card reader is USB3, would it be fastest to just pull data straight off the SD card while I'm working and then maybe use a second small HDD for caching/temp files, or should I use my two 500GB drives in a Raid0 as the "project disk"? Or even if anyone has some good (and recent) learning resources for simple disk management specifically for video editing, and would like to share, I can read too! Thank you!
