Getting a girl into BoC

Post by Spine »

Hey guys. I need a bit of help. I've been "talking" to this new girl and while we're hanging out she wanted to listen to some of the music off of my iPod. We shared a pair of headphones and I just put the darn thing on shuffle. When good ol' BoC came up it happened to be that wondrous little Roygbiv tune everyone knows. She seemed to really enjoy it and now I'm making it my duty to get her into them. Can you nice and pleasant gentlemen help me come up with a decent mix of beginner-friendly tunes that wont drive her away from the duo? :)

When I try to introduce people to BoC, I usually show them MHTRTC. In my opinion, it's their most approachable album.

Thanks man :) I'd like to get a little bit of a mix between their albums though. Y'know, give her a taste of their overall discography.

Can't go wrong with Everything You Do Is A Balloon. If she doesn't like that song then you'll never get her into Boards.

Roygbiv
Everything You Do is a Balloon

... and I'm gonna go ahead and say 1969 and Happy Cycling.

Although Campfire Headphase isn't their best and really doesn't convey their sound, you can't deny that it's pretty accessable.

Don't force it on her... let her find out for herself.

I don't see Everything You Do Is A Balloon as a track girls would like.

Sequoia has a similar feel to Roygbiv. Hey Saturday Sun seems pretty good, too. Dawn Chorus can be pretty uplifting as well.

I would have to agree. Quite a few tunes from the Campfire Headphase are very catchy and (dare I say) near-listenable to mainstream audiences. My wife and I would definitely have to add Satellite Anthem Icarus and Chromakey Dreamcoat from TCH as they are both very chill. Your choices of Happy Cycling and 1969 are very good.

Haha I'm not going to keep bothering her to listen. I'm just gonna burn her a friendly little CD and hope she gets around to it and enjoys :)

A Beautiful Place is one of the tracks that made me fall in love with BoC, I would def add it to the list.

I think Forest Moon is also hard to dislike. It has the most amazing melody.

Tracks like Roygbiv, Dayvan Cowboy, Whitewater, Seeya Later, Everything You Do Is A Balloon, A:B::B:C, Julie and Candy, Dawn Chorus, 84' Pontiac Dream... they're all great beginner's tracks.

at the same time, if you're burning a full disc of their tunes, don't forget some transitional ones; that's the reason the 'beginner' BoC songs work so well, the transitions.

During the winter break here in China, my friend Erin had to listen to me harp on about how awesome BoC were. She finally caved and asked me to give her some of their music.

I gave her MHTRTC and Geogaddi.

She loved them both.

After that I just gave her my entire collection on mp3's to listen to which she loved too.

I don't think it matters that she's a girl, more whether she's into that sort of music or not.

Turns out she was !

And another is converted to the cause !
One Very Important Thought
