Geogaddi=(insert dark/down epithet here) ?

last night I went to bed with earbuds in [which is more or less the norm for me] listening to Geogaddi.
woke up with sleep paralysis. Couldn't move until 'Corsair'. was simultaneously wonderful/terrifying.

I never understood why most people view Geogaddi as a downer album, or one that sounds evil or bleak, to me it's likely one of the best work of the brothers, and yes, there are bits of it that do NOT sound all trippy happy but that is much closer to life than an artificial barbie-girl constant high on bliss, no?

I don't know, just asking, what is it that makes Geogaddi so dark to all of you?

Geogaddi = Melancholy.

I know I might take some heat for this but Geogaddi isn't even close to my favorite Boards of Canada album. I far from dislike it but if I had to make a best of Boards of Canada album and I didn't have a lot of space I'd take Music is Math, Julie and Candy, and Alpha and Omega and leave the rest.

I always find Geogaddi to be quite the experience, and yes there IS one track that I just can't fathom... the devil is in the details... it is great but something about it just grates me right against the grain...

geogaddi = tension [best release in my opin]

listening to geo a few days after getting it, on my way to sleep, JUST as i was fading out i hear "but you may be dead...but you may be dead...." in dawn chorus. NOT a cool thought to be put in your head as youre falling asleep. ha ha ha. gets you thinking when youre in a susceptible state.

Well, the reason why I find Geogaddi to be a "scary" album is mainly because about 6-7 months ago I was taking a walk because I was really tripping out on a couple pills of wellbutrin a friend of mine gave me. I decided to put Geogaddi on, and started walking to the Chicago waterfront. As I went, the album started to sketch me out quite a bit, and it was like my emotions for the album were being focused and intensified.

When Gyroscope came on, I was walking down Lake Shore drive, and my headphones were cranked up to the max. But, the phones were too loud, and I couldn't hear the cars drive past me. So all I got was a bunch of blurs jumping in and out of my visual range that I couldn't hear, and was in the middle of one of the most intense songs on that album. Needles to say I started freaking out a little bit. I then walked through the Museum Campus area, which has lots of trippy architecture, and some architecture that looks kinda Boards-ish.

One of those Boards-ish places was this crazy half-pipe walkway next to the water.

At this point in time, Alpha and Omega was playing, and I have always had an unnatural fear of falling into water. So, my fear was combining with this euphoric feeling that the drug was giving off, so it was like having an awesome walk through a dark, surreal place. Also, it was cloudy that day, and the sun had just rose, so the water was the same color as the sky. It was like looking off into a blank blue-grey backdrop. It was very disorienting.

So...all in all, I think that the reason why this album is seen as surreal is because it's like a euphoric journey through a disphoric land.

I've tried listening through Geogaddi on psychedelics before, and while some individual tracks on it are utterly delightful to hear, as a whole its always a dark, eerie experience. Twice I've had a mini-freakout during the devil is in the details. shit just gets weird.

It's dark in the sense that it ventures fearlessly into the unknown and the ambiguous. There's no base or default to Geogaddi. It's all fluttering, shifting, dancing, comforting chaos. That's why it can be seen as overall dark to many, and overall brighter to others. It's an utterly abstract work.

I dont find it depressing at all, in fact im most happiest listening to this album while strutting along a Cornish beach under a hazy September sun, sure there are some weird tracks like the devil is in the details but all in all somthing about this album helps me appreciate nature and the great out doors, this makes me smile

Honestly, Geogaddi reminds me of Lord Of The Flies, The Blair Witch Project, and War of the Worlds.

None of which make me "uncomfortable," they just keep me on my feet.

Shocking tends to impress.
