Classical BOC

This is probably old news to most here but there are a lot of new members so i thought i would post it anyway. I found this on soulseek ages ago. It's from a London Sinfonietta concert of classic Warp tunes adapted for orchestra (i think - someone might correct me on that).

Anyway i think this is pretty good and makes me want to hear more BOC adapted in this way. It kind of sounds a bit under-rehearsed and like it almost falls apart and meanders away a couple of times. (At least to my classically untrained ears - it's probably supposed to sound like that). Most of it is great though.

Has anybody heard the rest of the concert?

For some reason I can't access yousendit.com at the moment but I assume this is the Sinfionetta's cover of "Pete Standing Alone."

I'm always a bit ambivalent about orchestral covers of popular music, especially because it seems like the artists don't always pick the tracks best suited to a symphonic medium.

Case in point: those of you that picked up Alarm Will Sound's take on Aphex Twin... did it seem like some of the Druqks (sp?) covers were a bit poorly chosen? I loved the covers from selected ambient works and stuff, but I would much rather have heard a cover of 'Tha' by an orchestra than a cover of "St. Michel's Mount."

In SUMMARY:

The orchestra does struggle a bit with Pete Standing Alone. Why didn't they cover a song like Everything You Do is a Balloon... and just leave out the percussion?

Agh!

No, it's wrong, that percussion sounds terrible! And out of time. Nice string adaptation but overall sounds way too contrived.
Like trying to shove a square peg into a hexagonal hole.

I went to one of the Sinfonietta nights, have to say i'm not much of a fan of classical avant garde in general. They did'nt do any Boards pieces but a few aphex pieces. Just doesn't work. The music should speak for itself, why translate it?

Highlight of the night was Squarepusher coming on in top hat and tails, sitting down under a little lampshade and previewing Venus no. 17 and Tundra 4!

Although the London Philharmonic occasionally hits hard when they translate classic rock...

Their version of Led Zeppelin's "All My Love" is better than the original, imo.

You should listen to Alarm Will Sound's cover of Blue Calx. Pretty nice, I think.

Pretty good.. but why'd they pick this song? They should have played Olson on their giant pipe-organ.

What other songs were performed that evening?

i alwasy liked this version.

i think this is one of there more easyer tracks to do in this way.

Yeah, those percussion guys are not pulling their weight. They're hitting off time in some instances.

Oh, and in the event that anyone here would like to sound even more sophisticated than they already are, something like the Sinfionetta covering BoC is really not 'classical' music in the strictest sense of the word.

I know that sounds anal.. but it's true...

my god... just thinking of an orchestral version of "tha" makes me drool, one of my fave all time tracks

Tha is definately one of the best tracks on SAW 1... if not the best Aphex track ever.
