Metal appreciation thread
So, do you guys like metul? What do you think of this massive genre?
Yeah, I do, atleast some bands I like. I've been to 100+ metal concerts in the past years, survived many brutal moshpits and one stage dive (during Walls Of Jericho). Favorite bands include:
Textures - excellent prog/math metal from the Netherlands.
Meshuggah - One of the most "intelligent" metal bands.
Iron Monkey - Quite brutal stuff. I call this heroin-metal.
Nasty - Ferocious beatdown hardcore. Crazy stuff.
Obituary - Gotta love John Tardy's growl.
Hatebreed - Classic metalcore.
Iniquity -

How could I forget:
Metallica - Kill 'Em All, classic!
Stick To Your Guns
And I attended this gig (sorry for bad quality), local band, love 'em, vocalist likes Kashmir Boots, was a great evening, check out the breakdown at the end

I know that feel bro.Rodheh wrote: Some great power metal and thrash metal in there, but the overall broad genre has been ruined by bands like Bullet For My Cocksuckers.
I've been a huge fan of metal years ago, starting from Nu metal and moving to Death, Heavy, Progressive, Black, Viking and principally Power. Right now I don't listen to it as much as before, but I'm still quite fond of it, you can find great bands if you dig enough. Here are some of my favs, check 'em:
Carcass - This british death band is full of greatness, the guitar sounds so catchy, vocals are near perfect and so are the lyrics!
Beyond Twilight - The song is called ''crying'', taken from their first album featuring Jorn Lande. All of their songs are special in a way, they reach a level of emotional expression that few musicians can achieve without removing all the darkness and agressivity inherent to this danish progressive group.
Blind Guardian - Because Blind Guardian.
Melancholy Pessimism - No doubt this is great black metal, and quite innovative, these Czech guys are one of a kind.
System of a Down - I know SOAD since I was eleven years old, and still they're my fetish. Specially love their first album. It carries an original crazy vibe that always cheers me up.
Judas Priest - What can I say?
Varg Vikernes - I LOVE Burzum, never heard anything so full of greed and disgust and so addictive at the same time.
Dream Theater - Yes, I like them.
Cryonic Temple - NEEEAAAAT
Napalm Death - Best music while driving.
maudlin of the Well - I don't know how this is called, genius metal? This murrikan band has been able to achieve a gorgeous mix of styles and turn it into pure poetry. Own all their albums in vinyl.
Oh yea Mastodon are amazing, I barely consider them metal, more fucking awesome.

Varg Vikernes is quite a special person. That whole Mayhem story is wild. I personally don't endorse setting churches on fire and killing people, though. He's quite the anti-BoC.
When it comes to black metal, I'm more of a Nargaroth person. He's not quite as sick minded as Burzum, but his music is sufficiently evil for me.

I never really post in topics to say I don't like it but for this one I'll make an exception.
I never liked the heavy guitar sounds in metal, except for the more popsongs of Metallica, Guns 'n Roses, and a few I can't remember the names off. But is this still metal or is it called rock?
My biggest fear is that BoC will go slightly metal with the new record because they've said it will be different than to what people expect.

Most critics consider Sabbath metal and even the inventors of metal, but I personally consider them a genre of their own. Sabbath were my teenage love, I know all their first five albums by heart.Kinski wrote:are flower travelin' band metal? or black sabbath?

Mayhem only released one good album, and their best vocalist (dead) shot himself before they did anything in the studio with him.
The music of Burzum is so atmospheric and claustrophobic. Varg is a person with disgusting views though, a convicted murderer and extremely right wing - so wrong.

My metal days (complete with looooong hair, tight black clothing, Blood Red BC Rich Warlock guitar and a total sense of humour loss) are thankfully well and truly behind me now.
Having said that, I can't deny that the hairs still go up on the back of my neck whenever I hear any classic Slayer, particularly the start of Raining Blood, Hell Awaits or South of Heaven. Oh so silly, and yet completely exhilarating.
As Mike Vennart once said, 'You don't like Slayer?!?! Check yer pulse man....'
Oh, and I'm off to see Motorhead in November. About time I paid my respects to Lemmy Kilminster.

It's evolved a lot in My case, starting on with KISS when I was at a tender age (err..
Nowadays most of what I listen is Black Metal, usually the kind that gets the bad press. Admittedly the shows are at times hilarious with the corpsepaint and the whole regalia, but it's all in good humor.
There's lots of Death Metal in Me, older In Flames, older CoB, early Norther.
But there is also a terrible array of bands that I enjoy
Blut aus Nord
Phazm
Scarve
Samael
Thee Maldoror Kollective (ok nowadays nowhere near Metal but back in the day)
Catamenia
Coroner (yess!!)
Red Harvest
Hollenthon
Julie Laughs Nomore/Triton Enigma
Nevermore
The Project Hate
Solefald
etc.
Yes to Me BOC is the oddball in My listening habits, and try as I may, no other "IDM" band can even come close.
