I'm not a violent guy but I got very upset with my life situation and punched a very hard part of the wall a couple of months ago. I don't know if it actually did any damage (never got it checked out, no insurance) but my pinky/edge of my hand were quite sore for a few weeks. Not too smart, but it happens every once in a long while.

Not on par with some of the gore on this thread, but I've managed to do something to my left eye. It's red, sore and swollen; but worst of all it's blurry as hell. cue really bad headaches and knackered vision. I'm seeing things in 2D as my depth perception is screwed! Keep hitting my hands off things.

Optitian has no idea what it is - going back on Thurs.

Put myself on crutches last night. Marvellous!!

Was playing football (US English = soccer) and was running full tilt when a mate of mine caught my ankle. I didn't fall at first, but it twisted me enough that as I put my 16 stone weight down on my left knee, it basically just collapsed under me with a rather sickening feeling of 'well that shouldn't be bending in THAT direction', shortly before I started squealing like a girl.

Long story short, hospital, x-rays, I've been lucky and managed to avoid serious ligament damage (my cruciate is fine thankfully), but I've got some cartilage damage in my left knee and I've also sprained my left elbow which makes using two crutches impossible.

So, I'm now hobbling around on my right leg, using my right arm to hold one crutch on my right side - NOT a good combination let me tell you.

Buggery bollocks!!!

Dono, your picture made me a bit ill.

Last night I went to a fourth of July party. Toward the end of the night, the ones throwing the party set off fireworks. 20 minutes after they finished I went down to the bonfire (located 15 ft away from where the Fireworks were being set off earlier) to grab a s'more and all of the sudden I felt something hit me HARD in the back of my leg. But, it also felt like someone just burned me with a big cigar.

Someone was passing by me so I thought it was them, screamed "OW"! really loud and when they didn't even look at me I realized it wasn't them. Still unsure of what happened, but I have a feeling that one of the dead fireworks decided "HEY I'M NOT DONE YET. I'M GONNA START UP AGAIN AND FLY INTO THIS GUY!"

Huge burn. Huge bruise. Was given some prescription ointment to put on it. It hurts every time the water hits it in the shower.

Don't stand close to where the fireworks went off, kids.

EDIT: 3 weeks later and I'm still on crutches. Turns out things are somewhat worse than first thought....

Found out today that my knee isn't sprained after all. I've totally torn my anterior cruciate ligament and I'm going to need an operation to fix it. This will have me laid up for weeks, possibly months depending on how bad it is. Fortunately, in 2011 they can do keyhole surgery which makes things easier. Not all that long ago (10-15 years ago) you'd be unable to play sport for 18 months and have your whole leg in plaster for around half of that at least. Guess I'm lucky to be born in the 70's and not earlier.

And, just to add insult to injury, the sprained elbow I thought I had turned out to be fractured. So I shouldn't even be on the crutches they gave me 3 weeks ago.

So, 3 months later, I'm meeting my consultant tomorrow to discuss the operation to reconstruct my knee. Doing a little revision in preparation. Which option do you think gives the greater potential for a truly gnarly scar!?!?

Option A - the Patellar tendon option. Old fashioned but established, option A enjoys nights in and out, old movies, Italian food and is looking for that special someone.

Option B - the hip and funky Hamstring tendon option. Young, well-travelled option B enjoys surfing, winter sports and likes to 'party-harty' without a hint of irony. Deep and mysterious (their own words) option B is seeking similar for friendship....and maybe more!

Damn! I hope you feel better soon!

My uncle had a cancerous tumor in his leg that he had removed. They went and had it removed from below his knee down to his right Tibia. They screwed in a rod in it's place. Then they didn't do a good job of reattaching his knee cap and it tore and became floating. They had to open his leg back up to fix it. Then after it healed and he began walking on it, it began to hurt again... They found out the rod was too long and made him off balanced and had to once again open his leg up to adjust it. That was a year ago for the last operation. He said he would have been better off cutting the leg off and getting a fake leg.

Cheers guys. To be clear though, I've not had the op yet - these photos are NOT me! I've that particular pleasure coming up before the end of the year. Tomorrow is to discuss which option to go for.

a) take part of my patellar tendon and graft it onto where my ruptured cruciate ligament was.

or

b) take part of my hamstring tendon and do the same.

There are other options, but these are the most likely. Then I'll have around 6 to 12 months rehab and physio before I'll be allowed to play contact sport again, if I'm lucky.

Sport hurts man!! lol

God, that looks awful! I'm in constant fear of seriously screwing up a hamstring or a knee. Had a dodgy hamstring for well over a year now which refuses to completely sort itself out and currently have a strained medial knee ligament which has seen no improvement in a month. Thanks for posting this as it has deterred me from playing football again just to "test" how bad it is!

If I was in your situation, given my injury history I would be tempted to go for Option B as hamstring is shite anyway! That logic can't fail surely

Either way, good luck with it and be patient with the recovery as it would be easy to forget what is at stake in the long term.

Well today was interesting. 3 to 4 month waiting list. January op it is then! Still. can't grumble - free on the good old NHS versus an estimated £2500 out-of-pocket cost if I was using health insurance.

No! The most ridiculous part of the whole thing! Saw the consultant for all of 3 or 4 minutes. Had a list of about 16 questions to ask him (printed up no less - organised for once!). He examined the knee, told me what I'd done to it (which I already knew) and then asked if I wanted the op. I asked him his opinion, ie. what were the implications of not having it etc. He told me if I wanted to play sport again I'd need it. I told him I'd have the op in that case. He told me about the waiting list and then said 'Right, I'll go do the paperwork then.' and that was the last I saw of him! All I'll say is I'm actually glad I didn't pay to go private: £180 for a private consultation. £180 for 4 mins!?!? I'm in the wrong job...

Then spent 90 mins doing all the pre-op stuff with 3 different nurses. Height, weight, blood pressure, MRSA swabs, screening questionnaires, etc, etc, etc.

Luckily, my Mrs works with someone who had the same op with the same consultant and he had the option I'd prefer (the hamstring one). Sounds like that's become the standard now but I'll contact him and double-check.

That's modern medicine... They judge the severity of a case and the treatment required by which boxes are ticked. It's not about the patient any more, it's about the diagnosis. Last thing I went to hospital for, I could have told them what needed doing and they could have done it there and then. Instead I had to go back 3 times over the space of 4 months before anything of any use was done and I still need to go back in again...

As fortunate as we are to have the NHS, their systems and the way they treat patients really can be poor. You only find out things by asking questions, often to multiple people as nobody seems to have the answer or even know who has the answer. You're viewed as a case rather than a patient.

But anyway, at least you're all set. I just hope the wait isn't to unbearable for you..
