Not sure if this would get much love on a Boards of Canada forum, but I figured I'd post it anyway to see who here happens to be a fan of this interesting group. I rarely listen to rock music, and this is the only band in my music collection that I can classify as such, but for some reason I can't stop listening to some of their tracks, this one in particular:

there was a time when i really liked 'Rated R'. still do i guess but i don't much listen to it anymore.

Massive love for QOTSA and also Midnite Vultures. Oh and Kyuss too. Sad what's happened to Nick Olivieri though. Looks like the guy has totally lost the plot.

First saw QOTSA just after they released the first album. True to form Olivieri was arrested for getting in something of a fracas with now-defunct UK scamps Terrorvision. A few years later I had the pleasure of seeing Mr Olivieri play a solo acoustic set in support of the incredible Mark Lanegan. The only time I've ever seen somebody terrify an audience playing a nylon strung acoustic (miked, natch) while SCREAMING so hard the veins in his neck looked like they were going to burst. Incredible performance.

As for Kyuss, 'Blues For The Red Sun' is about as perfect a stoner-rock album as you'll ever hear.

seems a lot of folk on this forum aren't into the "rock" genre of music. from what I remember of QOTSA I liked them.

I figured that's where your name came from.

I'll have to check out Kyuss, I've heard of them but I've never heard anything by them.

I think you meant to say Them Crooked Vultures, Midnite Vultures is a Beck album.

Love EVERYTHING they've done...Josh Homme is one of my biggest idols and influences for music. From Kyuss to The Desert Session to Queens and Them Crooked Vultures, not to mention all the little projects he's been involved with, I cannot get enough of that sludge sound. Rated R is probably my personal fave..haha

LOVE QOTSA! Songs for the Deaf will always be a special album for me. Mark Lanegan, Josh Homme, Dave Grohl and Nick Oliveri in the same band..... incredible! As far as rock music goes qotsa are my go to band. Never really got on with them Crooked vultures though for some reason, maybe the album needs another listen.

Also, thanks for the heads up Mexicola, had no idea about Nick Oliveri's troubles. Looks like he's in deep...

Yeah man, don't think he's walking away from this one. The man who has 'Pressure' tattooed on his neck (as in peer pressure) may well be heading for the big house. Very sad.

Anyway, as alluded to by Noumenon, here is where my the name Mexicola came from.

Yes, and it's certainly not the same without Homme either. He's got a great guitar sound, especially in Kyuss. So gutteral and chuggy.

God damn it, I keep for some reason confusing Queens of the Stone Age with Fall of Troy, which sucks because I have nothing against QOTSA and think FOT is an overrated incoherent mess.

Anyways, yeah. I don't really know anything about QOTSA. Personally I don't really care for a lot of rock. I lean towards electronic music because of how easy exploring and utilizing different sounds synthesizers have made it for us. With recorded audio, there's a very limited amount of sound diversity to your disposal in a typical studio, and most of the time, bands don't go to the lengths of perusing that sound diversity. Usually they feel satisfied making an album with the same guitar sound, same drum sound and same vocalist sound on every track.

I personally don't see why and can't for the life of me see how it's enjoyable, but hey, if it floats your boat musically, go for it. It's just not for me.

Great band. Really slow burners for me. A few of my mates banged on about them just after Songs For The Deaf and whilst I liked them, I wasn't blown away. As the years have passed i've found myself becoming more and more of a fan. Saw them last year and it was the loudest thing I have ever experienced. Like having headphones on turned up to 11
