BoC album that relates the most to you.

Post by Jonse »

Pretty easy, what BoC album (LP or EP, or otherwise) relates the most to your life and why?

For me, it would be Geogaddi. More so than the "nostalgia" sense most people relate to BoC, it forms an emotional pattern that I feel quite commonly in terms of mood and themes. I also feel pretty closely to Twoism and Hi Scores though, with a couple of tracks from those two feeling all too familiar with me in a way that's not really easy to describe. For example, when I heard Sixtyniner and Everything You Do Is A Balloon, it was like recounting past memories that I never even had to begin with.

You guys?

Having seen how similar in events and feelings of mine your posts were in the depression thread, I'm not surprised.

Geogaddi's...a bit heavy. I don't think it's innacurate to say people who've had everything go well in their life tend to prefer the lighter side of BoC and people who have been through some shit tend to appreciate Geogaddi and a lot of their early, heavier stuff more.

I'd have to say IABPOITC is the release I can relate to most. It just feels so airy and, well, natural.

In a Beautiful Place Out In The Country

It's pretty indescribable how it makes me feel. It makes me think of who I am, my past, what's next and beyond that. Kid For Today makes me shiver every time I listen to it while Zoetrope gets me pretty emotional.

Yeah, Twoism and Hi Scores are a great combo of both the dark and the nostalgic elements that I like about these guys.

IABPOITC. It's sort of a comfortable melancholia.

Twoism.

It's sad Boc gradually started to ditch their melodic qualities, it's exactly what I love about the album.

I can agree with that. For me, TCH and TCH (whoa, just noticed that) are my two favorites, though that's because I listened to them for the first time probably at one of the highest points in my life, the sort of climax of childhood (even at 17) before the realities of life begin to shock and you have all of that nonsense to reconcile with your now-shattered worldview.

I'm going to go there and listen to Geogaddi until I transcend.

probably MHTRTC
because even though it's a little weird and mysterious, still light and playful at times.
Which i like to think I am.

Same here. Listening to Geogaddi and Campfire Headphase tell me that BoC did not abandon a melodic quality.

Maybe he's referring to shortly after Twoism with MHTRTC and other pre-2000 endeavors. That album I found to be a lot less melodic and a lot more mood and sound oriented as opposed to sheer melodic writing. Take for example tracks like An Eagle in Your Mind, Telephasic Workshop, Rue The Whirl and Pete Standing Alone which are dramatically more percussion and sample based as opposed to Twoism which did rely quite a bit on melody and really just sort of ripped a lot of its percussion from old songs.

No I'm specifically referring to Geogaddi and Campfire Headphase. Barely any track besides the vignettes has any real melody going on. There are still little melodies going on inbetween the other elements in the songs, but rarely ever there is a melodic lead in the center of the song. It works quite well on Geogaddi, but I think it's the exact reason why TCH isn't as good as it could be. The only track on TCH that centers around any sort of proper melodic line is Dayvan Cowboy (and to an extent Tears From The Compound Eye / Farewell Fire too, but these are vastly different in comparison to the rest). I guess that's also the reason why that remix of Left Side Drive with the vocals added from a while ago felt like a breath of fresh air. It added a missing ingredient to the song, a melody, and it fitted quite well.

Also if we look at MHTRTC track by track:
Wildlife Analysis: melody
An Eagle In Your Mind: no melody
The Color Of The Fire: no melody
Telephasic Workshop: melody
Triangles & Rhombuses: melody
Sixtyten: depends, personally I think the melodic line is a bit sparse and in the background
Turquoise Hexagon Sun: melody
Kaini Industries: melody
Bocuma: melody
Roygbiv: melody
Rue The Whirl: no melody
Aquarius: no melody
Olson: melody
Pete Standing Alone: no melody (debateable)
Smokes Quantity: no melody (this one maybe too)
Open The Light: melody
One Very Important Thought: melody
(Happy Cycling: first half = no, the end = yes)

Similar results with Twoism too.

I can't agree with it about Geogaddi. Geogaddi has some of the best "real melodies" BoC has ever written. Not sure how Music is Math, Julie and Candy, 1969, From One Source All Things Depend, Dawn Chorus or Corsair lack "proper" melodic lines.

With Beach at Redpoint, Alpha and Omega and Gyroscope I can kind of see it. A good percent of the melodies in those tracks sound like short clips layered over each other in ways that weren't really intended to match. However, they seem less simple to me than similar oriented tracks from their previous works.

Now with TCH, it's a bit more devoid. A lot of the tracks on that album have some really indiscernible melodies. However I did feel it to be quite melodic with Dayvan Cowboy and Chromakey Dreamcoat and whatnot.

I wasn't really taking it out on Geogaddi, but rather pointing out that when you juxtapose MHTRTC and TCH, Geogaddi evolutionarily fits perfectly between those.

Music Is Math definitely has a melody, though it is a bit "random notes from a scale"-type (that's exactly what the JP bonus track is though). Though simplistic, Julie And Candy has a melody definitely. Danw Chorus is one of those I talked earlier, a few melodic lines playing on top of each other, but none of them takes the lead. Not sure what melody you see in 1969, the vocals? Corsair doesn't really have melody either, it's just a chord progression. Many of these tracks are great though, it doesn't make a song automatically inferior if it isn't centered around melody.

Earlier Boc material also had a lot more creative and inventive melodies, many of the more recent ones seem kinda plain.

You can't hear the melody in Julie and Candy? Are you immune to hearing flutes or something?

Also, isn't chord progression a key point to a melody often? And does a track not containing melodic elements past this not form a true melody simple because it does not bear a lead?

Edit: Hmmm...well now looking at your MHTRTC track by track post, I'm honestly not sure what to you constitutes a melody.
