How did you first hear about Boards of Canada?

Back in late fall of 2003, I was looking at Aphex Twin on Amazon. I had just bought the Selected Ambient Works series and totally fell in love with them. Anyway, I scrolled down and saw the "customers also reccomend" section. I saw Boards Of Canada's name, gave it a click, and saw the Twoism EP. The first thing I had ever heard by them was Iced Cooly... and it totally blew me away! They did everything I ever dreamt to do in music in just that one song! It was totally lo-fi, out of tune, warbly... and utterly beautiful!

similar experience, browsing amazon for Aphex and looked at the customers also recommend section...

Sometimes you just buy a record because of:
- the name
- the title
- the cover
- the label

Doesn't work all the time, but once in a while the name is "Boards of Canada", the title is "Music has the right to children", the cover is (well, you know...), the label is "Warp/Skam".

I was very into almost all of warprecords releases...it was really Aphex Twin who made me check out the other warp releases, then I found that mysterious group BOC..I first think I heard Roygbiv and thought "wow this is it!! that one of the most beautiful pieces of music I ever heard!!!"

Wow, scrolling back through this topic I could've sworn I made a reply, but I guess not. I first got into Boc around the time Geogaddi was released but my first listen was MHTRTC. A good friend turned me on to them right when I was starting to break free of listening stricktly to underground hip-hop. I was very into Dj Shadow, Dntel, and Massive Attack at the time and I told my friend "you gotta hook me up with more music like this!". So he played Roygbiv for me (*high five to Archrival*) but it was'nt untill I heard the whole album that I was hooked. I was listening to MHTRTC alone in my room at night and ''Aquarius" came on and I remember laughing out loud when the ''Orange!'' sample came on. I remember thinking this is the weirdest but most beautiful music I've ever heard.

gosh i don't remember exactly, but all i know is that the name and association with "ambient" or "intelligent dance music" stuck to the back of my mind and once i got fed up with the cheesy dance music that i used to like i decided to see what their music was all about, that was probably about two or three years ago, thanks to TCH i was able to 'rediscover' their brilliance in my harddrive and cds.

i was deeply loving post-rock like radiohead and sigur ros and i soon discovered another layer of experimental, bands like air and aphex.....and soon in my search for even deeper beauty i found boc (some place on theinternet) i didnt listen quite then, but downloaded 'in a beautiful place' ep. a couple of weeks later i was alone in the darkroom of my last class of the day (highschool), and i put it on...i was definitely impressed and taken back, but it was not until a week or so later that my friend got ahold of mhtrtc and me and and 2 of my good friends went into his room, shut the door and tripped on it. it was amazing. by the time "olsen" came on it was the absolute perfect way of 'summing up' the deepness of the melodic beauty.

Amo Bishop Roden is probably in the top 3 of my favorite Boc tracks ever.

It was on a friday in 1996 in my local recordshop, and the salesman told me to listen to a release on the Skam label SKA008, my favourite tracks on that 12" are Turquoise Hexagon Sun and June 9th, that's when i became addicted to BOC.

saw IABPOITC EP in a record shop in Camden Lock in london and thought -hmmm intersting name and cover but I didnt gety it then. A while later got an MTV snowboarding compilation with IABPOITC track on it. Hmmmm very interesting. Next got Lead with the Base Club Vol 2 with Happy Cycling. HMMMMMMMMMM extremely interesting. That was it. Hooked.

i was in a record store in LA and i remember seeing a BoC cd i hadnt seen before...at the time i didnt know what the hell it was...now that i think back... i am pretty sure it was BOC MAXIMA...would that be possible?

I'm pretty sure I already posted in a very similar thread which is likely buried somewhere on page 16 of this forum. Either way, I kinda like reliving this experience. I remember I heard "Sunshine Recorder" on one of those music-only stations on satellite tv. It scared the shit out of me, so I absolutely had to have it. I went out and bought Geogaddi and haven't been the same since.

I was doing the daily rounds on AllMusic.com found myself on the BoC page, downloaded some tracks, and would just play them before I went to sleep.
I only seemed to have the more dancey trip hoppish stuff like sixtyen and see ya later, heard IABPOITC and then I really became intrigued.
I soon started downloading alot of their stuff and they became my favorite.

1996 and my mate who was buying everything on SKAM at the time was away in Malaysia so I was picking stuff up for him. I got Hi-Scores listened to it once or twice then put it away. Just wasn't feeling it. I was more into dancefloor stuff at that time despite being well into Aphex since day 1 and all kinds of other instrumental electronic stuff since I could remember it just didn't grab me. I was in a party kind of place in those days.

The in '97 he came back and we were sharing a house and I kept hearing June 9th through the floor and thinking it was okay.

Then the album came out and I heard Roygbiv.

Now I got it. I got a tape (that's right kids - magnetic cassette tape) of the album and was borrowing my mate's Hi Scores 12" all the time to mix Nglox with the Pointer Sisters. I remember him persuading me to get the Aquarius 7" too. Money was tight so it wasn't automatic but he got me on the investement value.

Well, the rest is history. I still look back at that wasted year when Hi-Scores sat their getting no play and wonder.

i saw BoC support autechre and thinktank in edinburgh many years ago (mid 90s i think). Quite an amazing gig. They had about 20 tvs stacked on stage at the Venue, and played lots of old super 8 film looped with washed out images of kids playing. visually amazing to watch.

my mate had quite a lot of the early vinyl,
and i first heard play by numbers when it was out.

several ears down the line and i still like them!
