Very interesting take from The Pirate Bay tonight. Excellent point raised about the birth of Holywood, which anyone who watched Mark Cousins 'The Story of Film' series will recall.

I'm pretty sure the idea was to disrupt the services many "normal" people use to make sure they hear about Sopa and possibly want to do something about it.

Seeing as I am not really that well read on American politics, and the way congress works. What are the chances of this bill actually going through? and if so.. will alot of you US users cease to be able access hundreds of basically legitimate sites?

Also, how much influence do these blackouts actually have? Surely if Congress is in majority agreement it's basically going to happen?

American is trying so hard to be like China, the new mac daddy superpower.

Forgive me for my probably obvious questions, I just can't seem to find a straight forward answer

The blackouts are just to get more people aware of SOPA/PIPA. The more people are aware of it and pissed off, the more people will complain to their congressman, and if enough people complain, the congressmen won't back it.

It was looking grim for a while, but now that attention on it has exploded, it's looking more likely that it won't pass. The far majority are against it now. It's kind of funny, there has been absolutely no coverage of it on the media at all. It's all just been via the internet.

How would SOPA/PIPA protect against hackers? It only protects against piracy, not hackers.

only for a bit. it, along with mpaa/riaa/emi/justice.gov/copyright sites are all back up.
DDoSing really doesn't do much. all the info (usually) is still there, and since these sites don't sell anything themselves, no loss in revenue.

symbolic, for the most part.

like someone on gizmodo pointed out, it's the e-equivalent of defecating on the doorstep of MPAA/RIAA/EMI headquarters.

i am told that SOPA/PIPA were really stopped by silicon valley pumping money into congress to keep them from passing the legislation fed from hollywood's money.

while it wouldn't surprise me AT ALL (good 'ole bought government), i don't have evidence just yet, but hope to soon.

anyone else find anything/hear anything? ACTA seems to be doing fairly well, too, unfortunately.
