Was maybe earlier than that. A few were floating around in 1999, and I had them before Ha-Ha Sound came out which was 2003.

I'm a standard Spotify subscriber, just checked it and everything appears to still be there up to and including Headphase and TCH.

i think dr. frot was talking about new music being on spotify, and then being removed. not the regular discography.

I live in constant fear of bumping into someone one day and them asking casually, “Hey, what d'you think of the new Boards of Canada album?”* and my having somehow MISSED IT ENTIRELY due to accidental non-use of social media/the interwebs/this site.

I therefore have as many little feelers out as possible, that could possibly bring the glorious news to me passively. Just. In. Case.

The thing im most looking forward to, as with any new album from a band I love, is the listening experience in it's entirety for the first time. Everything is so new, usually some songs stick out and some go by in a blur, but as an experience it's unique as opposed to any further listen, there's something about the initial impression which is so incandescent. Hard to describe, but im sure everyone knows what I am on about.

It's weird, but somehow you can tell right then what your long term relationship with the album is going to be like. There's an underlying "goodness" that you know will develop into something approaching obsession, and yet total unfamiliarity prevents any meaningful evaluation of individual tracks right then (people who blurt out 5* ratings of albums the day it's released, don't get me started). Often I find myself eventually most loving the tracks I found most "difficult" to begin with.

Contrast this with the album that instantly satisfies, but you know will burn short and bright in your passions, before sputtering not long after.

And of course, the unmitigated shite.

[I can recall experiencing one exception to this categorisation, and even this may be romanticising a little, but the first fevered listening, as an utterly obsessed 17 year old, to Depeche Mode's Violator, sat on my bed at my mum's old place, fulfilled all my musical hopes and dreams on the first listen, and hasn't really ever died down - I am still enthralled by it, 22 years later!]

I've never seen the huge hype about Aphex Twin. I mean, I really like the Richard D. James album and On EP, and Windowlicker is obviously a great track, but other than that I'm not particularly impressed with him. I don't care much for Autechre's more recent material as they've gotten much more glitch and percussion-based. And besides Not For Threes and the Tekkonkinkreet soundtrack, I find Plaid's discography kind of boring. I still haven't heard Scintilli yet, as I haven't been listening to much Electronic music lately.

Obviously I really like Sequoia a lot. More than most people do it seems. The only reason Plaid's track "Fer" got so high was because the section right at the 3:00 minute mark.

Well, after months.... and months.... and months.... sat reading everyones comments on here in anticipation of any news on the new album / black box appearing - I've decided to make the jump from 'lurker' to actually participating in the discussions!

Cant believe its now over 200 pages, but guess its been that long since the last output from Boc that something like this would inevitably build up over the time.

I'm always hopeful that there will be another album, and hope that by getting involved on here it will at least make the wait for any news that bit more interesting.

the black box wasn't just put there to get everyone's hopes up. there will be more music by boards of canada. the key, is to enjoy your life in the meantime. and also go enjoy, all the beautiful music that they've already released.

There is a reason for the hype, perhaps one day it will make more sense to you. I have had Surfing on Sine Waves for over a decade, and never got on with it. Last month I picked it up again for my twice-a-year-listen, just to make sure I still didn't like it (I do this with a few albums MBV Loveless being another one, and I still don't get the big deal). I put it on and it goes BOOM! I am literaly floored by the brilliance of it. I cannot understand for the life of me why I never liked it. Real weird.

Anyway I'd suggest you always keep Aphex in mind. If you get into it, you're in the envious position of discovering all his music. Go listen to Alberto Balsalm if you haven't heard it before.

rdj's selected ambient albums are incredible, though very different. vol. ii is enormous but is like traveling to another planet. there are some really haunting tracks that have stuck with me

I concur, also there is "Mike and Rich expert knob twiddlers" that is very cool and the "I care because you do album", all are splendid.

As for the new BoC album, im gonna go ahead and speculate a release in the first half of this year and im willing to bet £1.25 to that affect
