BoC album that relates the most to you.

I wasn't really taking it out on Geogaddi, but rather pointing out that when you juxtapose MHTRTC and TCH, Geogaddi evolutionarily fits perfectly between those.

Music Is Math definitely has a melody, though it is a bit "random notes from a scale"-type (that's exactly what the JP bonus track is though). Though simplistic, Julie And Candy has a melody definitely. Danw Chorus is one of those I talked earlier, a few melodic lines playing on top of each other, but none of them takes the lead. Not sure what melody you see in 1969, the vocals? Corsair doesn't really have melody either, it's just a chord progression. Many of these tracks are great though, it doesn't make a song automatically inferior if it isn't centered around melody.

Earlier Boc material also had a lot more creative and inventive melodies, many of the more recent ones seem kinda plain.

You can't see the melody in Julie and Candy? Are you immune to hearing flutes or something?


Also, isn't chord progression a key point to a melody often? And does a track not containing melodic elements past this not form a true melody simple because it does not bear a lead?

I see these supposed melodically lacking pieces of music as giant chunks of melody, myself.

I literally meant "Their" (earlier) melodic qualities, not melody altogether. Never said or meant their songs weren't melodic anymore, but they certainly aren't as much centered around melody, especially not a single lead melody. You guys are getting this all wrong...

Not always. I'm not exactly sure about whether Corsair can be classified to have a melody. Probably, but it's not what I'm looking for (still love the track, one of my favorites off Geogaddi).

No, I understand exactly what you're saying, and I would agree their melodies are not as complex (with a few exceptions, which oddly enough Music is Math and J&C are two of them to me, personally I feel they are considerably melodically intricate, sort of concealed by layers of percussion) as they were on Twoism and Hi Scores. No they don't have those dynamic, far reaching leads like they did back in the day on the newer stuff. If that was entirely what you're speaking of then that's fine. There was a misconception. It's hard to tell what your intention is when you first state that you miss their melodic qualities of the time and their leads, but then you say something like that it's debatable whether Corsair has a melody or not.


My main guess why BoC decided to go in that route was because they wanted a more well-rounded sound.

That or they just got lazy/tired of writing melodies.

I meant I'm not entirely familiar with the exact definition melody in musical theory. I'm not sure if Corsair could be said to have an actual melody (probably could), or just a chord progression. Doesn't really matter though since it's nothing like a traditional song at all.

Campfire Headphase and Trans Canada Highway are my all time favorites. I think because there isn't really anything scary or any hidden messages whatsoever on the album, unlike with Geogaddi and MHTRTC (which may be their best albums, but not really my favorites).

I had always wanted to drive across Canada before I listened to this album, and I was like woah how perfect?!

I have to say MHTRTC has to be it for me. Although everything from Old Tunes through Geogaddi get me to that same place, this is the one that piqued my interest when it came out and it felt like I had discovered some secret musical world with its own language.

I remember Geogaddi coming out and it feeling like a pretty big departure from where I expected them to go. The live material in 99-00 definitely made it seem like they were going to be leaning toward longer, electronic based music but it's almost like they reversed direction back to Old Tunes territory by the time it came out. (obviously Old Tunes was not around for public consumption at that point, but it definitely felt older)

Old Tunes definitely helped me understand Geogaddi more once they leaked.

Can't think about any album in particular, only tracks. There are a few where I can relate intensely because they feel so human and tragic, in a way. Talking of Twoism, Julie and Candy, Turquoise Hexagon Sun, Sixtyten, Slow This Bird Down. Other ones seem more dreamy and illusory.

It's really interesting to see that a good number of people like The Campfire Headphase and Trans Canada Highway. A lot of "professional" reviews are pretty critical of those two in particular, and they almost always talk about long-time fans being disappointed by the use of guitars and clear instrumentation on Campfire. I'm really curious as to who the hell these long-time fans are and how exactly they communicated their opinions.

I started off trying to listen to them in 2004 with MHTR, but I guess due to my tastes at the time, I didn't really appreciate or understand it. I revisited them in 2006 and this time started with Trans Canada, and that's what really opened me up to them. Heard From Telegraph Lines resonated with me instantly and it blew my mind, and Under the Coke Sign captured my mood perfectly. It took me a while to get into Campfire and I didn't really like it at first, but it eventually became my favorite full-length by far.

I've been listening to Campfire pretty regularly since then. I don't really understand any of its criticism or why anyone would give a damn about what instruments they used when the approach and message are exactly the same. When I try and introduce the band to other people, I usually start off with Dayvan Cowboy and they love it as soon as the violins kick in, although I like the entire song, including the buildup and tremolo guitars. On Sunday nights when I'm usually stressed out or extremely anxious, I can always come back to A Moment of Clarity, Sherbet Head, and Tears from the Compound Eye, and it calms the hell out of me and gives me some composure.

Sorry for the late reply, but thanks bro. I think I enjoy them most because they were the first albums I ever heard from them. I loved the relaxation, joy, and nostalgia vibe on those releases. But after listening to Geogaddi, I've realized that it's their best work by far. It may not be my favorite but it is amazing. But hey, we're all BOC fans in the end.
