The difference between BOC and SOTL is the latter actually talk to their fans. Had more than one message to/from Adam Wiltzie via Facebook and Brian McBride isn't shy either.

respect for SOTL for replying to messages. I know some artists simply get too many messages and it's impossible to reply to them all, but you usually know that they care if you hear of someone getting a response from them (the artist). I have a feeling that it's a good thing that boc don't interact with fans, simply because if people found out more what they were like on a personal level, they'd probably find them to be pretentious assholes. although they probably aren't : )

Thanks. Seriously beautiful stuff. I've just heard bits and pieces so far though. Where should I start?

Well I'm a relative newcomer to SotL as well, so I know how daunting their vast catalog seems! First heard 'em on last.fm a little over a year ago and was instantly hooked. Personally, I started with And Their Refinement of the Decline and worked my way back and found that to be quite rewarding. If you're more interested in dark ambient stuff you should check out their earlier records, and if you like the more ethereal, classical-ish music start later in their discography. Either way, I think you'll grow to love all of their beautiful music.

You might also want to check out Adam Wiltzie's side project A Winged Victory for the Sullen. IMO one of the best albums of the decade.

You've got a lot of music to listen to, so turn down the lights, turn up the volume and let the Lid in to your heart!

Stock answer: you literally can't go wrong. No exaggeration.

Slightly more helpful answer: probably start with either 'Avec Laudenum', or 'The Tired Sounds of...'. Personally, I'd probably suggest avoiding '..Refinement of the Decline' to begin with, but only because it's alot to digest in one go. The earlier stuff is more obviously guitar based and more avant garde in my view, while the newer material is more neo-classical in nature.

As Amo Bishop Roden said - don't ignore the side-projects either. That's another rich vein to tap.

A Winged Victory for the Sullen should be compulsory listening.

For my part...

Refinement was the album that got me to purchase their whole discography. That said...

I'd say Avec Laudenum. I really think that is one of the most stellar ambient pieces I've ever heard. I'd put it up there with 'On Land' or 'Music for Airports' anyday.

I always worry moments like this might dissuade Stars of the Lid from communicating as much they do. They seem to have a fan base as religious as BoC really, and just as crazy about new material. (Though Stars of the Lid seems less interested in being overtly cryptic).

I imagine after a while they'll learn the same thing I learned with my 2 year old daughter - you can't say words like 'fruit snacks' out loud without consequences. Same goes for words like 'new album'.

Yeah, I would definitely recommend these; 'When The Detail Lost Its Freedom' and 'The Effective Disconnect' are two of my most listened to records.

He has spoken of another solo album in the future.

So I finally started listening to them... amazing. It's strange as I got straight into A Winged Victory for the Sullen and completely bypassed SOTL. Plus they're fellow Fulham fans (I know it's just the Brian McBride link but don't ruin it for me!) so they're obviously cool as fuck.

Looking forward to the new one.

Problem is there is nobody quite like Stars of the Lid.
