Great News For DJ Shadow Fans

"We here at DJShadow.com are very excited to announce a major new archival release exposing Shadow's early production on the Akai MPC. Containing entirely unreleased material spanning from 1992 to 1996, the project is entitled, "Total Breakdown: Hidden Transmissions From The MPC Era, 1992-1996." Included among the highlights are instrumental tracks from an aborted 1994 EP planned with The Gift Of Gab, which includes the original demo of what would eventually become 'Six Days.'"

For sure, I think that's a given among Shadow fans. The record that I think is overly criticized and underappreciated is "The Outsider".

DJ Shadow, like many good electronic artists today is a victim of the music press.

Pitchfork's law states that once an electronic music artist has released an amazing record, every subsequent record therefore shall decline by an average of 20%, 2 points out of 10, or 1 yellow star.

Just watch, the next time BOC releases a record they are going to get it pretty bad from music press, regardless of how great the album is. Music critics like to bitch more than anything. It just sucks that more and more people are buying into it.

Is it me or the music press doesn't have any credibility? I must be getting older, because the music I like isn't rated very high anyways on those review sites & the reviews haren't always well informed. It happens often that a reviewer without musical knowledge says that a breakbeat in a tune is a "drum machine" or a "beatbox". So most of the time I ignore the music press, it's a very silly & immature press imo with a few exceptions...

I've been reading music press for years (read both Lester Bang anthologies and other musical books too). I've developed a few allergies:

1) Critics who praise one artist by dissing another artist.
2) Critics who use too many adjectives
3) Critics who insist that the primary criteria for evaluating an artist's work is the degree to which it is different from the artist's previous work

The third one is what I think killed DJ Shadow and I think will ultimately result in BoC releasing a very different record from TCH - whatever they may say about hiding out in a bunker and ignoring the outside world.

I totally agree! There's many artists that I like that don't follow those rules (so they get bad press) but that I still like very much (Unkle for instance). Also, I think it is unrealistic to ask an artist to renew itself 100% each 2 years. There's a limit in what people can do (& artists are people).

Back on topic: I'm listenning to the new DJ Shadow album & wow! I really dig it! Far from being as bad as critics said! There's even some uplifting songs like "Warning Call"! Really good work there & his back with the old dusty break we all likes (I didn't liked the supa-clean production on The Outsider). I prefer a dustier production, more lofi.
