ACTRESS - RIP

Anyone listening to this? Great album all round, quite experimental. Shades of BoC in places...

Still working on wrapping my head around it. One of those albums that really reveals itself over time and with repeated listens. Much like Burial in that regard.

Fantastic record. I would talk about it here but I've found this place takes music that isn't IDM or downtempo kinda harshly and weirdly. <_<

I like some of Actress's stuff but the hype is kinda killing it all for me.

I found R.I.P. to be somewhat above average, but all the people proclaiming it as album of the year (and I've seen loads in forums, reviews, and comments)... this I honestly don't get.

And all this hype has the terrible effect of bringing my appreciation for the music down. It's as if there's something I don't hear and all those people praising it do. It's as if this music wasn't meant for me so I'd better leave it aside... Not sure if this is rational at all, but that's how I feel about it.

Is there indeed something I don't hear that everybody else does? Where's that magic I'm missing?

I kind of felt this way with Oneotrix Point Never's latest record. But I think there's some very accessible sounds on this new Actress one.

people let what other people think get to them?
Is this why I can't talk about these kind of records on this forum?

Really?

Really?

y'all need to sit in the corner and think about yourselves for a minute. This is a little ridiculous.

sorry, that's just what I think. Who gives two shits about what other people think. People say Arcade Fire are amazing. I think they're boring. Is there something I'm missing? Fuck off I am, they're shit if I think they're shit. But only to me. It doesn't have to appeal to everyone, if it doesn't appeal to you, then move on and leave the fucker behind.

Fuck everyone who has opinions, just listen to your own.

It's not the same, TTK.

First of all, yes, most people do care about the opinions of others. A simple example: if we didn't, we wouldn't be in this forum (or any other for that matter).

Second, there's an enormous difference between not getting the hype, and simply disagreeing with someone else's opinion. I have no problem disagreeing. But I have problem with hype, because most of the time it is artificial and the result of something else, not the qualities of the hyped thing itself.

And finally, in this particular case, it comes down to something that I generally enjoy and think I have enough knowledge and taste in order to judge and evaluate - music. When I'm presented with music that I enjoy moderately, but this same music makes 90% of the people (most of whom also have knowledge and taste in music) go absolutely mental about it and praise it to the skies... then I get somewhat confused and start wondering if there's something fishy there.

You agree? ;)

So, this is me simply wondering. Was it just marketing that made Actress this big? Was it that someone influential said we should all enjoy it (as in Oprah's book club)? Or is it that Actress is amazingly stunningly awesome when playing live?

I believe you would be able to explain how and why BoC's music touches your soul (regardless how vague and subjective such an explanation might be). And I was just wondering is someone could explain how and why Actress's music touches them.

Fair enough. It's just that you mentioned you found it fantastic and wanted to talk about it, so I kinda expected more... ;)

But it's good shit indeed.
