50 years of the Rolling Stones

A lot of (fully justified) Beatles love here recently, but what about the Stones? Played their 1st gig 50 years ago today.

I suspect that there won't be as many fans here, but I absolutely love them. One of the vest bands I've seen live, and how many other bands have had an amazing run of albums like Beggar's Banquet > Let It Bleed > Sticky Fingers > Exile on Main St. ?

Very few can do dark, sexy, groovy rock n roll like them. Let's have some Stones love...

Perfect Rock n Roll. They played my local cinema in 64' - nice claim to fame, the only other cool thing about my town is that Blur are from here.

But yeah, the Stones are such a great band and like you said that run of albums is amazing. My grandparents always preferred the Stones to the Beatles actually. I have always been in the Beatles clan, but living in the 60s I can imagine before the Beatles got psychedelic and experimental, the Stones appealed to a more leftfield audience, looking for more excitement and less serenading.

I spose they will forever be in the Shadow of the Beatles - but they are undoubtedly rock n roll royalty.

Stuck Jumpin' Jack Flash on the jukebox last night. I'm very much a singles man, but I'd say I think about 12 or songs of theirs are good enough to be classed as great. If anyone wants to make an album track playlist I'd be grateful. Or simply some suggestions will do.

I like a few of their songs somewhat, but I don't really understand what the fuss is about.
Seriously not that intelligent and awesome music.

Braddock - I could put together a playlist of album tracks, but frankly I would just dive straight in with Exile on Main St. - I never tire of it: it's sprawling, grimy, loose, funky, druggy, sexy. Recorded in a damp chateau basement and it sounds like it. It's a brilliant distillation of blues, rock n roll, soul, gospel.....

I'm going to pour a large whisky and stick it on now.....

Agreed. But if it's not intelligent then it has to be awesome. And for me the big RS aren't both for me.

I still think intelligent & awesome is the best possible combination.

I think it all comes down to a matter of taste.

It can be a number of things that lead me to like music.

Intelligent layerings, simplistic hooks (rarely love these but some people can do it well without it being too throwaway), meshes of genres, lyrical poignancy and honesty, epic soundscapes, lo-fi twangs, even a good pop song. Then you've got things that sound good but you don't know why. There's certain genres you dislike but there's usually something within it that you can appreciate.

Everything judged on its individual merits and there's plenty of it that you have to listen to a certain way, or in a certain mood, or with a certain context in mind.
