Influences

Post by thedisavowed »

Ok... so I keep hearing comparisons between BOC and My Bloody Valentine and the Incredible String Band... but my casual listens on amazon and such really haven't verfied this for me...

Do you guys know some My Bloody Valentine or ISB tracks that are a lot like BOC? I'd like to hear them.

They don't sound like BoC at all, but they do have some of the blurred, hazy atmosphere in common...
My Bloody Valentine: Soon
ISB: something with a 'Log Cabin' - you should find it easily...

Neither of them really sound much like BoC - I think it's more to do with ideas and the general feel of the music. ISB is sort of like folk music and MBV is distorted indie-guitar type stuff. The MBV album Loveless has quite a psychedelic feel to it which reminds me of BoC and there's a guitar track on Old Tunes Vol 1 which reminds me of MBV.

tracks from my bloody valentine like 'blown a wish' and 'to here knows when'
are similar to some of BoC's music in the way that uplifting melodies bend and drone
to create a sort of instability. also, the track 'touched'
is a short BoC sounding instrumental.

they have used samples of the incredible string bands song 'when the music starts to play'
on the remix they did for clouddead, you could feel the sky and the smallest wierd number.

if you get a chance to see the ISB's dvd 'be glad for the song has no ending'
there is a segment close to the end that is very like BoC both aurally and visually.
a circular image of a buffalo moves across the screen accompanied by rising harp sample
thats adjusted in the same way as the melody in 'sunshine recorder'
its an interesting film, you should check it out.

Influences doesn't necessarily
mean they have to sound alike.

I'm not a huge MBV fan but the track ''Only Shallow" is quite awesome. And I still never heard anything by ISB.

Imo the band Slowdive is much better than MBV. I made a topic about em but no one ever responded. :( Blue Day, Just For A Day, and Souvlaki are all excellent releases. I actually think Slowdive's sound is more reminicent Boc cause they have that sad melancholy sound and their music is very layered.

Hey, the fact that BoC doesn't sound a lot like their influences is a nod to BoC. They've been impacted by MBV and ISB, but that is only a part of their unique sound. Which is something you can't say for all of the people who sound like BoC.

hey derail, they're really good! thanks for the recommendation. machine gun is very good indeed.
have you ever heard of a singer called nina hynes? she has a beautiful tune called 'bring me to life'
from her album 'creation' its a bit different to slowdive but has some similar elements. she sounds a bit like bjork but this track is amazing

I love MBV and of course their Loveless album but don't forget to check out some more older works of theirs. It's more sort of folky in general. But there's all sorts of stuff. You Make Me Realise is fantastic and really heavy. Strawberry Wine is probably my favourite and has that folky style.

I can definitely hear the influence.
