The Space/Cosmos Thread

Can anyone recommend any good documentaries about space, preferably about the planets? I've watched the BBC documentary "The planets" more times then I can count and that was made back in 2004 I think.
There must be a more up to date / similar series type thing?
Thanks
"Live long and prosper" (fuck, did I just really type that)

Stating the obvious, you've checked out 'Wonders of the Solar System' from the BBC / Prof. Brian Cox I take it? Essential viewing. 'Wonders of the Universe' is probably even better.vballs wrote:Can anyone recommend any good documentaries about space, preferably about the planets? Cheers dude but yeah I have seen Wonders of the Universe, it is damn good, I'm hoping there will be a new series of it or something like that, I like the way Brian explains things, even a dumb ass like me can have some comprehension about the stuff he talks about.Mexicola wrote:Stating the obvious, you've checked out 'Wonders of the Solar System' from the BBC / Prof. Brian Cox I take it? I'm also hoping there is or will be 'The Planets' version 2.0 or something with new footage and scientific discoveries explained.
BTW if you like Wonders of the Universe I must recommend to you 'Through the wormhole'. Instead of Brian Cox it has Morgan Freeman (haha) but there is some really fascinating / mind bending stuff to indulge.
Vballs - I'm delighted to tell you there's a 3rd series of Wonders due soon. Wonders of Life I believe? Hook up with Brian Cox on Twitter for more details (he's great on Twitter by the way - Twoist and me had a chat with him a couple of years ago about his flight in the BAE Lightning in series 1).
Fujee - that's an awesome shot man!! Thanks for sharing.

Only 500m years after the beginning. Amazing.

Huge respect for anyone who undertakes an OU course. I remember how hard I worked for my degree when I was a full-time student, so anyone fitting that in around a normal 9-5 is superhuman in my view. The Friendly Stranger wrote:I had the exam for my OU Astronomy course today. The last 8 months have flown by. I've come across some fascinating stuff and its great to be able to watch TV documentaries about the subject and understand everything! Time to crack on with the next course
Indeed! Well done Friendly Stranger!
I am tempted to do one in Astronomy one day too, Open Uni is such a brilliant idea.
Good luck with the next course!

Thanks guys. It's not easy but it's the best thing I could've chosen to do. It makes you value your free time so much more. Not time is wasted.
Fujee, I'd certainly recommend the course but be aware fees have increased substantially so the course I did would now set you back £1250. In my opinion, it's still worth every penny and I can't speak highly enough of the OU. For the record this was my first OU course and it's level 2, I was able to progress straight to level 2 with credit transfer from previous study though I hadn't studied science before. It was a huge challenge but worth the effort.
Here's my next course:

And here's my course materials...!

Cheers for the advice mate, once I have myself sorted out in life after my degree/masters/phd, maybe I will persue my love of Astronomy.
Good luck with this next course! Big respect!

Voyager on it's way out now. Loved this article, especially the person who wrote the long comment at the bottom about Sagan.

When you think about it, it's just insane. These two craft will survive for eternity, roaming the universe long after we are gone.
Wow.

What they lack in number they make up for in brightness. Should be a good shower if it stays clear
