Hi all, been lurking on here for a bit now, but this thread has urged me to speak up! It's like a therapy session for problem jazz addicts!!
I absolutely love jazz, there's so much amazing stuff out there if you keep digging. I started out, probably like many people hunting for hip hop samples, devouring Kudu, CTI, Blue Note breaks and just began to be amazed at the other music on some of those LPs, spiritual, cosmic, psychedelic music that seemed to defy categorisation, John McLaughlin, Mahavishnu Orchestra, John Klemmer, Pharaoh Sanders, Alice Coltrane, Lonnie Liston Smith to name but a few... here's some gems I've stumbled across...hope you like em!

jazz is almost universally something i enjoy immensely. my 180g 2010 reissue of miles davis' 1959 masterpiece 'kind of blue' is one of my more prized possessions. now if only i could get a decent record player/analog hifi setup...

Electric era (late 60's early 70's) jazz for me. Miles Davis (In a Silent Way onwards) and Herbie Hancock (Headhunters). I love the rhodes piano. That whole electric jazz sound just oozes cool. Perfect vibes for a late night in the city.

Okay,

It's a little weird admitting being into jazz; you're at once afraid that people think you're either totally pretentious or not-into-jazz-but-say-you-are-god-knows-why etc. I think, for me, the reason why good jazz strikes a real chord is its level of playfulness... improvisation at such a high level of playing, with such stunning results from the greats. You just hardly get that anywhere else...

...Jazz, more than any other music I've encountered, is more often geared towards the present tense; live, alive and in the moment...

So-- am I alone on Twoism? Or has anyone else experienced the jazzgasm? @_@

I really enjoy listening to music with complex time signatures sometimes...

Spiritual Jazz fusion pioneer Lonnie Liston Smith's birthday was yesterday, so I couldn't pass on the opportunity to post this (even though I'm late)

This thread predated my interest in jazz. Since digging into library music several years ago I have come to really appreciate jazz and jazz / funk. Happy this thread exists.

King Curtis - A Whiter Shade of Pale


Curtis was stabbed on August 13th, 1971, during an argument with a pair of drug dealers he discovered on the steps outside his Manhattan apartment. Curtis was attempting to carry an air conditioner into his apartment when Juan Montanez refused to move from the entrance. A fight ensued and Montanez stabbed Curtis. Curtis was transferred to Roosevelt hospital where he died.
In March 1972, Montanez had his sentence reduced from second degree murder to second degree manslaughter in exchange for pleading guilty and he served seven years. However he was released on December 5th, 1997 from Wallkill state correctional for good behaviour.

On the day of Curtis's funeral Atlantic Records closed their offices. Jesse Jackson administered the service and as the mourners filed in, Curtis's band, The Kingpins, played "Soul Serenade". Among those attending were Ousley's immediate family, including sister Josephine Ousley Allen, other family members, Aretha Franklin, Cissy Houston, Brook Benton and Duane Allman.
Franklin sang the closing spiritual "Never Grow Old" and Stevie Wonder performed "Abraham, Martin and John and now King Curtis".
Allman went on to honour Curtis by interleaving a melody of "Soul Serenade" into the band's rendition of "You Don't Love Me", first in a show at the Academy of Music on East 14th Street in Manhattan on August 15th, and later during a live in-studio recording at A&R studios in Manhattan on August 26, recorded for posterity and released on LP as part of the band's Dreams compilation in 1989.

Curtis was buried in a red granite-fronted wall crypt in the 'West Gallery of Forsythia Court' mausoleum at Pinelawn Memorial park in Farmingdale, New York, the same cemetery where Count Basie and John Coltrane are buried.
