I endorse this statement wholly!TaoTapeTao wrote:We've come full circle and I'll say it again- people can have their doubts and opinions on the state of BoC's music and lack of a new album but honestly their is no utility in treating other people like shit because they believe otherwise. It's kind of sad really.

Anyone whining about 6 years clearly isn't a fan of: Testament, Loco Locass, Accept, Coroner, Sword, Cipher System etc. etc. I mean, the range here is from 5 years to 20+ years between one album and the next.
It seems that when you are THAT pointedly anchoring your life on a single release, it's time to defocus a bit, you know, go out, throw a frisbee, take pictures, just listen to the wind.
If it comes, it comes, if not, oh well, life isn't BOC-centric

Yes I agree with this.
I also just think in general fans of any band need to accept the fact that they are FANS and CONSUMERS and in the end the artists are the artists. They will take as long as they want. And that's how it should be, artists are as a result entitled to what they produce and the time and effort they put into it. If you're upset about it you either move on or get over it, don't patronize other people who don't complain.
And taking years to make an album is nothing new like Magrathea has said. Tool is a perfect example and they spend 5-7 years on each release. I'm not going to complain because they're doing what they're supposed to and they're doing it right. I feel like this is just common sense and it pisses me off that fans think they're entitled to anything- we don't deserve shit.

its kind of nice though. i mean even though a lot of us began to argue and stuff. its really all driven by the same passion. we all have a love for the same music and we need to remember that. its cool because i rarely speak with people who are also boards of canada fans. so here i get to experience that.
on another note.
the more i think about things. i think the new album will be a complete departure from their old work. every band\dj and his grandmother have been trying to mimic BOC sound over the past 10 years. something tells me that BOC are going to throw a complete curveball and make something that will stand apart from the crowd

That is true. Yeah I wouldn't be surprised by a departure from their style in a way and I bet it would be quite interesting.Fireal420 wrote:its kind of nice though. i mean even though a lot of us began to argue and stuff. its really all driven by the same passion. we all have a love for the same music and we need to remember that.

Whenever I start to give up, that last minute of Smokes Quantity (1986 Summer Fire) comes on and I renew all hope for the future, my life, the universe, and new Boards of Canada.
How can a couple guys make such a simple piece of music so emotive? I'm sure the new album will be astounding and a new direction. They're probably just intimidated by the high expectations they have conjured in their fans. That happens when you make amazing music. I'm at a point in my own music where I have literally made almost 30 albums of music and released it online. I'm no BoC and I'm not meaning to brag, either; rather, I understand the point when one has brought all of his ideas to musical fruition and becomes stuck, creatively. I've worked the range from sugary and atmospheric electronic, to IDM, to sludge metal, chiptune, post-rock, and mash-ups of all those genres. Hell, I'm working on a sound-collage/grindcore (GRINCORE haha) project, now, that's how far I've stretched my own limits of self-perception. Perhaps the brothers are meticulously self perfecting and criticizing their music and selves. That, and the intense hype, can be very hard to overcome and I am certain that those factors are at work, here.
Oirectine just came up on the playlist.

I'm a man that does not strive for a certain genre, in his music. Ugliness among beauty. Or is the other way, around? Maybe just all ugly.

I think this is a really good point - it's interesting when you look around just how much the BoC aesthetic that seemed so different with MHTRTC has seeped into the mainstream - just look at the rise of hipstamatic & Instagram to see how many people are making their crisp digital photos look like a lost Polaroid from 1974. Then there's the whole chillwave thing, Ghostbox and the concept of hauntology. A wander round Topman or Urban Outfitters and you'll see faux-faded t-shirts for imaginary college sports teams from Iowa in 1980...

Yeah you're right man, you could argue a strong case for the albums impact on mainstream fashion and aesthetic. But I guess you could argue in an ever increasing digitally sleek, pristine and neatly designed world there was always going to a natural nostalgic implementation into technology and fashion.
The album most certainly influenced, directly or not, much of electronic and indie music today. No doubt about that.
I wouldn't be surprised if they did go full departure, even made something heavily guitar based, like Loveless. While still maintaining an organic and hypnotic style unique to them.

Eh, there's a fakeness to it that doesn't quite feel right to me. Using computers to emulate the effects of an old photo doesn't make it an old photo.A_Northern_Soul wrote:"the more i think about things. i think the new album will be a complete departure from their old work. every banddj and his grandmother have been trying to mimic BOC sound over the past 10 years. something tells me that BOC are going to throw a complete curveball and make something that will stand apart from the crowd"

It's nice that the feeling is somewhat popular, but people probably need to understand that the reason for BoC's doing this with their music stems from their childhood and whatnot, where all of those things were right where they belonged. There was no attempt to make it "retro" or anything, it was just honest. A bit different than hipsters throwing filters over their pictures of their ugly girlfriend on an iPhone, if you ask me.
Regardless of how people act, I don't think there's any question that BoC will most likely try to do something different (once again), and at this point it would have to sound unlike anything they've made. I'm pretty sure their goal was to be unique to begin with, and if their style has been so relentlessly copied (as it has), appealing to that particular aesthetic again would not be the kind of thing I see coming from them.
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.

I would fully support a release like that. I have a feeling they are quite talented with more typical instruments such as stringed stuff and flutes and all that but it's masked by their production/sampling/use of electronic elements. I bet they could make something absolutely beautiful even while being stripped of heavy processing.
But I love that part of their style anyhow. I'm sure they'll come out with something and I'll love it lol.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised- I have a feeling that's why they don't release a lot of stuff.MrMessiah wrote:Could be a reason for the delay - not saying it IS, but what if they were say 80% of the way through an album and then took a look around at all the people copying their style and went "eh, **** it", binned it and started over?

Yeah man, i've noticed a lot of the BOC aesthetic around these days, it used to really fuckin' annoy me, but in reality it's just a 'trend' (anyone else hate that word?) and will fade out in a couple of years, i hope so anyway. It seems all you need to do to make it big these days is wear a pair of chino pants, play in an indie experimental band, have a quiff and call yourselves something silly like 'The Crystal Deliriums'.

Yes, but do they completely fall off of the radar, literally not saying anything as if they don't even exist?TaoTapeTao wrote:Yes I agree with this.

For the most part yes. For five years they said nothing and in general they're off the radar anyhow.
And that's not unusual for BoC anyways- they seem to always be off the radar...

Nope and neither has BoC fell off completely of the radar.Helios wrote:Yes, but do they completely fall off of the radar, literally not saying anything as if they don't even exist?
There have been various tidbits of small things they released onto the net in the course of the last years. Even though it might seem neglible to you, it still is a form of communiction indicating they haven't vanished in thin air.
And no I'm not yet again going to give you some specific examples. Why not? Because it has been done multiple times already and it would just mean you haven't been paying attention to the various boc related sites on the net.
They still exist. There will be new stuff. Patience is a virtue.
Exactly, there has been a new album on the verge of release for sometime now, but hasn't been officially released do to family stuff and "logistics".
