Classy speech from Obama and Romney was gracious in defeat.

This is probably one of the most testing upcoming terms for a president ever. It's amazing he was even competative with the levels of unemployment and such. Just the circumstances of the world at the moment that enabled him to have a chance.

I hope he does good on his promises, at least more so than his first term.

Something I don't quite get is why Romney had a higher percentage in the popular vote when they said Obama won. Did everyone who went out and voted yesterday waste their time? Do our votes even count?

Not really. A state with only a few representatives in the house and senate is essentially fucked in terms of the presidential election.

Yes, to my understanding he did win the popular vote as well, albeit by a smaller margin.

Personally, I think the popular vote should be the way the election is decided and would be more representative of the people as a whole (as well as yield closer elections), but there's nothing I can do about it.

Obama eventually got popular vote. But when he got that 270 in electoral votes, Romney was at 52% in the popular votes. That's what Youtube was showing, anyhow.

The only problem with that is that the majority of voters (like the majority of humans in general) are uninformed about economic issues and world political issues. The majority of voters vote based on personal issues--not for what they actually think is best for the nation as a whole. So, if you have a straight democratic vote, then the country is going to be run by an uneducated mess of sheeple who have not the slightest idea what is going on. That's why the electoral college was instituted.

(Dare I bring Tumblr up here) On Tumblr, all I have seen for the past month is "Romney is a woman-hating homophobe. If you vote for him, you are stupid. Vote for Obama." It's as if these are the only issues that seem to matter to some. So, in a way, I'm glad that the electoral college exists. But at the same time, I'd like to have more of a voice in choice.

And you believe our representatives are more interested with what is "best for the nation as a whole"? They almost always pick sides and refuse to work together. I know the majority of voters are not politically savvy but I have a hard time believing the majority of representatives are doing their job better than the public could.

If the public had a say, Bush wouldn't have been elected to presidency in 2000 and the US wouldn't have gone to war in Iraq. Just throwing that out there. The American public is stupid, but they're not that stupid.

Oh they're pretty damn stupid. Half of them can't even seem to get dressed before they go out to collect their government benefits. They just wander around in their pajamas with kids they shouldn't have ever had running around their feet while the baby's daddy runs off and fucks some other dumb slut. If I had it my way, I wouldn't allow them to vote because they're uninformed morons.
