The XX definitely for me - everyone says they're so amazing, minimalist and 'deep' but all I hear is just soulless, empty, melodramatic boring trite.

Feels good to get that off my chest

You're not alone. I mean there's nothing bad about their music, it's just plain boring.

surprised to see Flyin Lotus and Led Zeppelin mentioned, big fan of both. but different strokes for different folks. I think with Flying Lotus he can be hit and miss, some of his shit is a bit too experimental for me, but then he has alot of really beautiful, intricate music

I agree totally about mumford and sons and the killers ( and all these mainstream shitheads, not because they're popular, sinply because they are honestly terrible ), cannot stand skrillex or that fool deadmau5 either. I also don't get radiohead at all unfortunately or Autechre (besides Amber, I like that).

( I'm also gona throw in any psytrance and dubstep just for good measure! )

anything jimmy buffet. I'm not even going to capitalize his name. the "artists" that I hear nowadays are forceably shoved into my ears, playing their songs every 10 minutes. these include, in no particular order, rianna, or however you spell it, taylor swift, cee-low, nicki minaj, anything little wayne, katie perry, and black eyed peas. now I know this thread is about bands that other people may like and would try and encourage you to have a listen, but I won't give the time a day to any of these people because they've all turned me off by constantly playing the same songs over and over. and I think every single one of them is atrocious.

I agree with you 99.9%, but Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash are pretty great.

Venetian Snares. For some reason it just doesn't do anything for me, which is disappointing for me cause normally I like that kind of crazy music.

Also agree with Led Zeppelin. When I was in high school I had this weird sort of superiority complex thing going on about how much better Pink Floyd was, though now thinking about it just makes me laugh.

Sidechaining the hell out of everything has been very much in vogue the last couple of years.

I'm bored of that sound now, and all the electronic artists who are doing it are starting to sound very samey.

I was introduced to sidechain compression by Lone's "Lemurian" album. I love sidechain when it's used like that. But now a lot of the trending electronic music is becoming more effects and less melody. But if there's no melody, you're essentially listening to noise.

But I guess it makes sense. There are people who thoroughly enjoy Skrillex.

first off, in the first post Northern Soul said critically acclaimed, the only really acclaimed artists mentioned in this thread seem to be The XX, Godspeed, FlyLo, and the one dude who picked Kid A, all of which I dig.
The rest are boring mainstream indie/alternative and terrible dad rock.

One actually highly acclaimed band which I cannot get into is fucking Arcade Fire. I don't get it. I'm the only one, I think their music is overblown and over the top with nothing behind the show of it.

Jesus christ... how can you hate Red Hot Chili peppers? Just from a musical standpoint though... they're all incredibly talented. By that I mean a staple of the definition of rock and roll and very important examples of it. Well no, not Anthony Keidis. He sucks. But I refuse because the chili peppers are fantastic musicians.

Same goes for Alice in chains and Pearl Jam! I mean come on. Well new AiC sucks but that's not the point. They're all great musicians.

And same with Zep. I used to hate on them until I actually sat down and listened to them... modern music would literally not be what it is without them.

As for artists I think are overrated- Squarepusher, a good amount of Aphex Twin (I think he's an egotistical twat...), Autechre, Newer Radiohead, Skrillex, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Daft Punk, Some Flying Lotus, Sigur Ros... the list goes on. Oh and Nirvana. I enjoy a lot of their music but Kurt Cobain was also a twat and got too much attention.

Well, one can appreciate a band's contribution, but that doesn't mean they have to like them. Most of Led Zeppelin's music is incredibly boring to me. Just my opinion.

This brings up an excellent point about the difference between an artist and their music, does it not? I just think it's interesting how it's inevitable that there's going to be some degree of intertwining between the artist's personality/image and their actual music. I've been trying to just hear the music more recently, as that's really the only thing I want to care about, but it's hard isn't it?

That is exactly right. I was just remarking at their contribution. I respect your opinion I'm just being obnoxious lol.

But their music has most definitely grown on me.. psychedelics may have helped that though

it's true it does end up being intertwined in one way or another.. I blame the media for romanticizing the perception of the artist before I do the artist though. I try to strictly listen for the music but sometimes the personality invades that. I do really love some Aphex Twin but some of it I can't bear to listen to.

With Nirvana I can listen to most of the music but I just hate Kurt Cobain lol, he was a junkie not a celebrity.

But I think that personality is important in music in a way(on the contrary there are bands like BoC where they try their best to avoid it) but I think a lot about the personality of the artist is reflected in the music. There's definitely music I can't listen to not strictly for its composition but because I can't respect the perspective or personality in the music.

I'm a huge afx fan but yeah i agree that some amount of his work is rubbish, and hardcore fans will think it's genius anyway, despite the fact he's most likely fucking with us. I can see him laughing away in his own weird head hearing people calling some of his tunes genius when he's more than likely taking the piss outta them.

As for Black Moth Super Rainbow, i think their older stuff was very very good, some of it at least. Falling Through a Field, Start a People and Dandelion Gum are all good albums in my opinion. I like their warm, fuzzy psychedelic tunes anyway.

I agree about squarepusher too, another guy who used to be good then lost it. I thought the whole Ufabulum thing was a load of bollocks, with that crappy LED wanna daft punk thing goin on, he gives off this really cocky vibe to me and I don't like that.

Also gonna have to add Amon Tobin to this (just a bit though) I love ISAM ans appreciate how crazy it is (also seen it live) but I just don't like the nnew direction he's taking with that album/project. I love all his old shit, big fan. But not of this one.

Also see a few don't like Flying Lotus, I don't get that. I think he makes some really cool stuff. Each to their own I just thought more people here would be into his stuff. I like his tunes that aren't just weird experimental shit I mean, if I had just heard that I would prob write him off too, as i'm not too into abstract crap like that.
