I'm the same with most metal. Like I posted in the metal appreciation thread, most of the metal I've heard just leaves me a bit cold - I like some roll with my rock. I think that's why I love Queens of The Stone Age so much - they seem to put a lot of emphasis on rhythm & groove - I remember Josh Homme saying they wanted to make music to make girls dance - a noble aim.

Josh Homme also has a great melodic voice that carries a tune no matter how heavy the guitars get. I always say that, in general, I don't get metal... but there are always exceptions. I really enjoyed the last Mastodon album, for example.A_Northern_Soul wrote:I'm the same with most metal. The problem with most metal is that it takes itself far too seriously. Though you could say that about a lot of genres.

And that is why I LOVE Queens of the Stone Age. Though some of their music is certainly not danceable- it's either really dancey or just robot-rock lol. But awesome nonetheless.A_Northern_Soul wrote:I like some roll with my rock. 4 years ago I would've said I don't get hip hop/rap but now I fucking love most of it. It's a really interesting genre.

Hmmm. IDM for a start. Any genre with the temerity to differentiate itself by declaring it's the 'intelligent' subset of another genre is deeply, deeply up it's own arsehole.fujee wrote:The problem with most metal is that it takes itself far too seriously. But how often is IDM considered as literally "intelligent" dance music nowdays? It seems like the term has just become little more than what this kind of music is referred to. There's not really a large percentage of people who listen to it who run around perpetuating the idea that they're more intelligent for doing so anymore...is there?Mexicola wrote:Hmmm. I think that's a problem with genres in general though. Often the music is limited to the ideas and values of the style and these ideas are perpetuated and often over-emphasized and recycled and turned to shit.
As I said before, with any genre there's the shit and the good you just have to weave through the shit.
I have to admit though, I like BoC and a lot of electronic music, but there's also a FUCK ton of electronic music I just can't stomach.

Funnily enough - my feelings towards most metal and most *wince* IDM are similar. Both leave me a bit cold. Funnily enough the electronic artists I like most are the ones who seem to use a lot of acoustic, "natural" sounds (for want of a better word) - ie BoC, Four Tet.
As for "IDM", it's a pretty horrible term. I object to it as a fan of often gloriously dumb-as-a-cupboard music. Every time I hear it, I want to run off and listen to Sheena Is A Punk Rocker...

Everything here is spot-on. And yes, "IDM" is a pretentious, presumptuous, self-indulgent label. When people ask me what genre BoC is, I usually opt for "Indie Electronic" or something along those lines.A_Northern_Soul wrote:Funnily enough - my feelings towards most metal and most *wince* IDM are similar. So you consider "electronic" to be a genre?Amo Bishop Roden wrote:Everything here is spot-on. And yes, "IDM" is a pretentious, presumptuous, self-indulgent label. You can't even call rnb a genre anymore. Remember when it was "rythm and blues"? BB King?
Make my day and google image search "rnb". Be startled.
We as humanity has thrown both the rythm and the blues right out the window.
I think its best we just call our shit the way we want. You cannot describe an intricate mix of sound with one word (one short sound).

In a broad sense, yes. Genre is subjective anyway, but I think calling one subgenre "Intelligent" discredits others for no reason at all.Rodheh wrote:So you consider "electronic" to be a genre?Amo Bishop Roden wrote:Everything here is spot-on. No, but I think you could give at the least some idea as to what it might be.Cupz wrote:You can't even call rnb a genre anymore. Remember when it was "rythm and blues"? BB King?

Calling something "electronic" is very vague.
Then again calling something "intelligent" is vague as well. I just think IDM is the best term I've heard to refer to much of this style music so far, simply because it's been extremely established to the point where the expected sound is not vague, and also it doesn't seem to me appropriate to call BoC-ish music "ambient techno", which I guess would be the second closest genre.
But that's just me. Seems like a lot of people who have an issue with the term take the term "intelligent" very literally here. Keep in mind at the same time that rock has nothing to do with stone, metal has nothing to do with metallic alloys and blues has nothing to do with a color palette. They're just terms.
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.
That would be a hilarious sounding genre.Mexicola wrote:Intelligent Death Nazi Metal On Acid Blues'nB.
I like the way this sounds like the music would. ie. truly fucking awful and like a man falling down some stairs in a sack.
I don't know what relevance this has to the conversation (actually, I do. None) but I thought I'd share.
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.
