I actually laughed out loud the first time I heard Tycho, because it sounded so close.. but now, I really like his stuff.

"Dictaphone's Lament" off of Sunrise Projector and "Systems" off of The Science of Patterns are favorites. I could probably listen to "Dictaphone" 24/7.

Thankfully the album Sunrise Projector doesn't stay completely Boccy all the way through and he takes it more in his own direction.

As for not mentioning influences. Eh, I could go both ways. Sure, it's nice to acknowledge your roots, but don't think its absolutely necessary.

Now if he was going around saying shit like, "BoC isn't recognizing ME as an influence!%@^&%" then that would be a different story.

But in the end, who knows. I like his stuff.. and to me it's excellent as another "Boc-a-be" (I just coined that, feel free to use it as long as I get royalties).

It does sound like there's more to it though from HW's post.

actually its a little more cerebral than that....his music has a very rare ability to infuriate me more than most things...i agree that science of patterns is good..but that projector album is an atrocity...the sound quality never changes..the samples are absolutely amatuer...the concept is right out of a gay los angeles based movie....(not a real one its just a concept)....i really just personally hate the man for putting that plastic shitspin out into the world...theres nothing that screams SOUL anywhere on that disc...there...

Heh, I'll agree that the sound quality never really changes (something that did actually seriously bug me about it through the first few listens).. and it is a bit soulless.

Pretty interesting how the same bits of music can affect different individuals.

His stuff sounds more Freescha than BoC to me. Agree totally about the cleanliness of the sound. Sounds like it was recorded in a sterile room rather than through the archaic equipment we all like to think BoC record with. It's pleasant and pretty enough but doesn't have that depth and organic air of mystery I need for music to really grab me.

Actually, some of the sounds really irritate me - the blatant portamento on the Pbs/Kae melody for example. Same reason I can't listen to the most recent William Orbit album. Just had a thought - Tycho are the IDM equivalent of The Crystal Method - on paper it's all there but in practice there's something missing.
