This is a big one, and it may piss a few people off. I don't say this very often, mostly through fear of the consequences. However, I feel this is the proper place, so just this once Imagunna go ahead and say it:

I just don't get......

.....Jazz music. *runs away*

Nah I get that, even as a massive Jazz fan.

It's basically pre-Amen breakcore played on a brass band.

I can respect it. Really, I do admire the musicians, and the people who can play it, and the people who appreciate it.

However, it's kinda wasted on me.

Even Four Tet who I love, I'm not so keen on his jazzier flavoured stuff.

Thats a good attitude to have.
I usually say , they're really good at what they do on a technical level , but i just dont like it , and i dont know why.

Jazz is a love-it-or-loathe-it genre , but im reminded of Juan Atkins ( the godfather of detroit techno ) track " jazz is the teacher " and the stuff herbie hancock did in the 70s / 80s that led to the breakdance anthem " rockit ".

I didnt even like guitars when i was 16 , but now i have one. Things change. Tastes change like a revolving door.

@2ndMOUSE

That's just it. I hated electronic music until I heard Utah Saints in the '90s. Tastes do indeed change, and tastes can be persuaded when something slightly different comes along.

Edit: incidentally, here's the very tv appearance that got me into electronic music:

Careful.
Some may consider that as self-promotion

Yeah i heard that before. Kudos for the very inventive use of the kate bush vocal sample.
I spent the whole time wondering if the keyboard player was using a fairlight cmi , which back then was £32k just for the basic system.

Funny to see musicians pretend to play their instruments again. The only person playing live was the guy shouting " utah saints " into the mic.
No cables anywhere . Ahhh the pretentious fakery of it all !!

I don't like this thread because it's about hate. I like U2... my generation, big influence on my life (I'm in my 30's), I like OddFuture because they are refreshing. I like The XX because their music is relevent to my life and relationship. I like Adele because she makes me cry. I like Grimes because _i am Canadian and ___i am __proud of her talent. Fuck all you snobby facetious twats who are subjective about what other people like. Quite frankly, I hate most of you right due to this and one other thread.

How dare you judge music without having some kind of critique! To the person who said they didn't like Autechre, that took a lot of guts. Elaboration on why is good though.

Here, fucking diss this:

Meh, I've been reading this and responding literally as "I don't get...". I always assume there's some worth in something and if I don't or can't understand it, it's probably a difference in where I'm coming from to people who do get it rather than some failing in the music itself.

Nothing wrong with a good pop record, see the guilty pleasures thread.

Criticism, even unfounded criticism is what fuels interesting discussion on anything creative. Especially something as entirely subjective as music taste. Besides, this thread has allowed a lot of people to elaborate on why they don't like said artists for one reason or another. Critiques are the most important thing in relation to the arts, as it gives a measure of value and integrity on something which is otherwise fundamentally down to personal opinion.

If you don't like this thread, don't open it. Not that it is even remotely offensive in any way.

Indeed, I always feel music/art is about what you can take away from it. If a person finds twenty minutes of a sine wave drifting in and out of tune to be amazingly profound, then good for that person. But I don't expect that everyone is going to "get" that. Really, I feel as long as someone isn't using their tastes as a means to view themselves as superior in some way, there's nothing wrong with what they like, even if I really don't understand it or like it.
You're gonna carry that weight.
