I prefer to just listen to the artists on here, rather than dl and listen to something immediately just because somebody is deceitful enough to mislabel their own stuff in order to get it heard.

Anyway, I gave in, seeing as how it's still being spoken about, in the hope that it might actually be something special, and downloaded it yesterday and had a listen.

It's nothing special. In fact I didn't think it was very good at all.
Yeah man, it was just simply curiosity on my part. I never heard of him/them before. I noticed a number of people on BoCs facebook asking about Gem Atriums tracks and advising him to stop trying to pass em off as Boards tunes. I couldn't find anything online so I knew somebody here would have an idea. I just wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

I'll never get why people try to pass off their tunes as legitimate BoC tunes. Maybe it's so they feel like they're as good as the brothers if they can fool a few people. They should take pride in their own work and not set out to try pass themselves off as someone else.

The reason they do it, is it guarantees this kind of reaction, as opposed to merely being listened to by a couple of people and forgotten about, like most of the rest of us :)

haha I see your point man, but I'll never understand why people put in the effort just to try pass off their work as someone else's, and get found out of course. I'd rather have feck all people hear anything I'd make and do it for myself. I mean alot of these guys are pretty talented, it just seems a shame that their motivation is to try pass off their work as someone else's. I see where you are coming from though man :)

The alternating current hum at the very beginning is at 60 hz. This wasn't made in the UK unless the recording is sped up.
I am eager to hear out an explanation for this post in all honesty, considering I have no idea what you mean, and you've been here far longer than myself while making less than 30 posts.

Electricity and magnetism go hand in hand: where you have one, you have the other. Electrical equipment throws out electromagnetic emissions, which float through the air, hit other electrical equipment and turn back into electrical signals. In audio equipment you've got the powerful mains power supply coming in, some kind of transformer that steps down from mains voltage to something under 12v, stuff happens to it, and it gets squirted out an audio lead to your recording equipment. If that's an analog audio chain, you're looking at about a 3V audio signal.

Now think about the mains power supply. Compared to your 3V audio signal, it's huge, in the UK 240V, in the US 110V. And the means of converting down from mains voltage to circuit voltage is with a transformer.

What's a transformer? A series of coils wrapped around a metal core. Or to put it in other terms, an electromagnet! If you created one on the bench, this thing would be kicking out electromagnetic interference like crazy when you turned on the power. Which is why they're usually so well shielded, or in power bricks away from the low voltage electronics.

Where things aren't properly shielded, the electromagnetic field can interact with another lower voltage part of the circuitry and interfere with the signal later on in the chain. You can hear this when it happens. What does it sound like? Well that depends what's making the interference. If it's your mobile phone, for example, sending out pulses of 900Mhz radio waves when it rings (radio is just another form of electromagnetic signal), it sounds like a pulsed high pitch noise. The step down transformer for a mains power supply gives out a different sound. The power coming in is alternating current, cycling smoothly around 0V - it looks exactly like a sine wave in fact. So you hear it in the audio signal as a hum.

Now, just like the mains voltage is different in different countries, the AC power supply cycles at different speeds too. In the UK, it's 50Hz, a 50 Hz sine wave. In the US, it's 60Hz. So if you hear mains hum on an audio signal, you can listen to its pitch and work out the speed of the wave, and from that you can guess where it was recorded.

You'd imagine that in scotland where the boys are, if you heard mains hum on the track it'd be 50hz. If you hear a 60Hz hum, that suggests it came from elsewhere, like for instance the USA.

*long breath out* so, that's what he meant. Here ends the lesson on electromagnetic interference and mains hum :)

Not to add fuel to the fire, but were the Sandisons even in Scotland in 1987? Wouldn't they have still been in Canada? They would have been around 16 years old and still in high school. Since they have never reissued Catalog 3, isn't it conceivable the album could have been produced at 60hz?

That's true. Also, nothing to say you couldn't record something at 50Hz and speed it up by just the right amount.

Treeline and birthday tape were the only ones that made hair stand like I'd found something. (Alpha quest and wouldn't you like to be free did too, except they turned out to be real.)

Also someone on /mu/ (I know, I know, I'm a fuccboi) claims to have Acid Memories and they posted it today.
I knew from the outset it was probably a fake due to Duffy but it sounds interesting.
Does anyone know who the real artist is?

I know I'm going to catch shit for this, but this sounds nearly legit. Circumstances notwithstanding, the "Duffy" song sounds like a very, VERY poorly recorded version of the Duffy we know. Track times are different, but some of the songs sound like large continuations of eachother. Were it a bit higher in quality, and cut correctly, I'd say they were legit. The guitars sound BoC for that time. JUST MY OPINION.

Jesus. Sounds like they put their microphones in buckets of sand, at the end of a wind tunnel full of gravel before they hit record.

Again, I'm an idiot for even doing this, but...
I ran Duffy through Audacity. Made some distortion, gave it some lo-fidelity qualities, and then ran it through a low pass. The two songs sound nearly identical, given the clip of Duffy as the undertones.

...Huh.
I expected to get a sooner confirmation on who the artist is.
Yeah the quality is poor but part of it might be that it's an MP3 <128.
So I'm not gonna throw this purported Acid Memories out the window.
So MDG says How Will I Know, EV clss TT pn and GE clis EE plmt prt are fakes then?

I'm really trying to avoid getting my hopes up... But Growing Hand / Petina is killing me at it's legitimacy. Even Duffy sounds a bit legitimate.
