I don't think this thread is about hate. That's certainly not why I started it. In my head it's more a case of seeing artists and even whole genres that are well liked, critically acclaimed and your mates keep telling you to check out, but..... something just doesn't click. For example you can play me a piece of metal and I get the musicianship, I can tell it's well produced..... but something about it says "nah". It's just interesting to think about.

It makes me think , is musical "taste" relative to life experiences , or something to do with an event in childhood , or the womb , whereby we are sonically imprinted , and , if the "event" had been a completely different one , would we now be on a death metal board , singing the praises of sepultura ?

I agree with the melodic type thing about jazz.. I can't get enough of it. Though I have to disagree with it being strict- it seems like jazz can be a very loose open ended type genre and it's at the root of a good deal of experimental music/influences. I'd say the pretentious overzealous jazz critics are the strict ones. But I still see what you're saying

I can diss it by deconstructing the lyrics and criticizing them for being a lame love story song. I'm just trying to illustrate the fact that criticism is possible with anything.

But in general you shouldn't take it so personally when people criticize something you like- everyone has their own opinion. I mean I guess that means you're entitled to being pissed about the criticism but still.. the bigger picture is that one needs to admit vulnerability and flaw and be aware of it because this is part of reality. Not just for music but for everything. So though it might irk you that someone else criticizes something you like, try not to get so emotionally involved. It's not like anyone's trying to attack you directly.

And just to be obnoxious, I hate the XX, Odd Future, Grimes, U2, Adele and whatnot. I don't mean to offend you and my opinion isn't "better" than yours- but it is the truth. You can feel the same way about a lot of music I might cherish. That's part of taste.

Yeah, that's more towards what was aiming at. There was a jazz program at my school, and everything was in strict form. It was almost as strict as marching band. Precision was key.

I wasn't a part of it, though.

Re: the Autechre discussion just for a mo, it's interesting. It's not a black & white, like/dislike to me - especially as the sound and 'feel' has transitioned so greatly.

If anything it comes down to individual tracks...But, to have to simplify it, I'd say I enjoy their earlier music more; the overall mood, melody, and tone. Perhaps even the opposite of whomever mentioned Incunabula has dated - I totally agree on that point itself, it has, but I'm experiencing it as a positive, liking the sound more with age.

If I have to pick the album with an overall consistency of the Autechre sound(s) I like most, I'm tempted to say Tri Repetae.

However, I ought to just drop a mention that Incunabula features, despite its simplicity, one of my favourite tracks ever...

I never understood Autechre for the longest time. All I'd heard was Tri Repetae and I thought it was the most boring pretentious music ever. Still do, actually. That said, after listening to Confield I finally realized that I had just picked the wrong album.

Aphex Twin I really, really don't get the hype. A few tracks off of SAWII are amazing, as well as a scattered few individual songs off of his other albums...but I dunno, it's always mostly sounded noodley to me.

Phillip Glass I don't understand.

Also, I saw someone mention crystal castles. They are the most overhyped band in recent memory.

Bob Dylan - yes, yes, I understand why he WAS relevant (once upon a time) but that doesn't make him any good. Dude sounds like the old timers who hang round bus stations arguing with the pigeons.
