I've just been less depressed. I can't really speak to the libido thing because of my hormone therapy. When you're on radical doses of testosterone-blockers and estrogen, your libido is going to change in ways SSRI's could never make it anyway.
Personally in my experience Prozac was always the least of a problem for me. I wasn't on a tremendous dose but the side effects were severely less then when I was on a similar dose of Paxil, which was horrible. I did eventually stop it though because of the libido thing and a general lack of effectiveness after two years of taking it.

But yeah, I don't know why I didn't point this out. That one's not that bad.

But the one your doctor is wanting to prescribe you (Guido) can be really bad.
Okay...now...wait for fog machine.

Thanks everybody for your answers.

Significant chances of becoming impotent and/or getting seizures would be reasons for me to not use this medication. I'll consult my doctor about it.

I finally got a hold of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories today. That should keep me from suicidal ideation enough to see the remaining Monkees play this November.

PS, I really hate to be the one who brings this thread up again.

Fuck, I don't want to be here. Please, don't feel obliged to respond; I just really need a place to vent right now and deemed this the appropriate location.

So, I have almost no money at this point in time, and I've been dicked around by a potential employer (who more or less promised me a job) for the last two weeks. I really don't want to have to sell my personal belongings, but frankly, I need to eat.

My family has lost all respect for me after a drug related incident this past summer and less than stellar academic performance (as well as a major transfer which they did not approve of.) I've always felt outcasted from them, even when I lived with them, and it's only getting worse. I'm not even comfortable talking with my parents. I got my grades up quite a bit last semester, which helped some, but this semester has been a killer, and it's not looking god for me. I should point out that I'm not failing out or anything; my parents simply have high standards. If they pull the plug on my financial aid I'll have to leave my campus apartment. Due to my financial situation, I have nowhere to live but with my family, assuming they'll have me. Either way, it won't be good.

I feel quite helpless against the influence of soft drugs and alcohol in my life.

I have some weird mental block I can't control that stops me from talking about these things with the people I care the most about. When someone asks me if everything is okay, sensing that something is wrong, I simply bullshit them or avoid the question all together. This makes me feel more alienated from everybody.

The only thing I have to look forward to at the moment is inviting someone new that I care for deeply out for dinner tomorrow. I really hope she goes for it. I really need something to work out right now.

Well, that's the brief version of the life of Amo Bishop Roden right now. Thank's for listening, all. Simply getting this all typed out has helped a little.

Thanks Amo for allowing me to vent as well without being the guy who brings this thread up again.

I fear that I may become a rapist in the future.

That is a bizarre way of putting that... you know it all boils down to self control right? I don't mean to criticize you as much illustrate that if you're afraid of that you can control it.

I guess it's more of a bizarre way of saying that I fear being alone for the rest of my life. I don't want to use the term "stalk", but I've been finding myself following a girl that I like and just staring at her from a distance. I fear that these actions may escalate further in the future.

Then just talk to her man. I know it might be hard and awkward and stuff but trust me most of it is in your head- if you make any effort to let her know that you're a real person and interested in her it always helps more than anything else. What've you got to lose, ya know?

Any users here on Cymbalta? I've been having rather fucked up bouts of anxiety (for years) and got that prescribed today saying that in addition to psychotherapy it would help.

Any words of advice, suggestions, comments or just anything?

Hey man,

after several horrible years which included very severe panic attacks, heart palpitations due to frustration attacks etc I started taking Cymbalta last December. The first day I was a little dizzy, then side effects disappeared. My panic attacks have almost disappeared completely and barely any frustration attacks anymore, although I'm still suicidal on a rational level every day. Want to talk about that latter issue with my psychiatrist soon, but I have the feeling that the medication certainly has helped me. I don't have much time now to type an extensive reply, but I will tomorrow. Or just message me with any questions.

Hey Guido,

Thanks for the insight, yeah when I tried effexor I was sick like a dog for days, so here's hoping that this time around with cymbalta it works better, I really hope this puts back some levels of control onto things like hypochondria which seems like nothing but really messes with my family life, professional life, etc. I am glad to hear that it helped, does it take time to feel a noticeable effect? I think the doc mentioned a couple of weeks but I am not sure.

Thanks again! :)

Ya, I'm on Cymbalta. It seems to help my anxiety to a degree. I'm anxious less often than before I started on it. But I'm also on a bunch of other drugs too. Are you on Cymbalta alone, or are there other meds you're taking? I ask because Cymbalta apparently intensifies/helps my Seroquel to work better.

I also suffer/suffered from hypochondria. In fact, I was prescribed Cymbalta in July, but I postponed taking it until December because I was afraid for any severe side effects that might result from usage. After letting my hypochondria, panic attacks, fears, frustration and depression culminate in a daily battle with life I finally decided to give this a chance. What surprised me that all of the most severe symptoms of my depression that I listed above were gone immediately (my psychiatrist had also told me that it would take a couple of weeks for it to take effect). I asked my psychiatrist about this and he argued that in people with such severe symptoms as me the effect of an SSRI/SNRI (Cymbalta is the latter) starts much sooner than in patients with milder debilitation. I've been taking the medication for about five months now and although I've increased my daily dosage from 30mg to 60mg (per my psychiatrist's advice) and I'm noticing a slight resurgance of my earlier symptoms, but in my own case I think it's more reasonable to correlate this to things such as bad sleeping habits and a life long predisposition for melancholy than to conclude that the medication doesn't work well enough. Watch out with alcohol and other drugs during the first period. I'm a seasoned drinker and although I abstained from alchohol consumption the first week after starting with Cymbalta, I noticed that even moderate consumption resulted in severe dizzyness the next day. Without alcohol I was fine, and because I've been taking the medication for months now, mixing it with alcohol doesn't induce any noticeable adverse side effects anymore. I hope Cymbalta works for you and that your problems with decrease in intensity or will go away entirely. Worth a try!

Depression is a tricky bastard. I think for me, it really keeps me unmotivated to move forward. Like, there are things that I would like to do, but I just never get around to starting. The procrastination is the hardest part of depression for me. I've been struggling with agoraphobia since this past summer, but it's recently gotten better. I do hope to move out soon, but these bouts of depression keep me from really doing the things I need to do to move forward in life.

I've come to realize (not properly diagnosed though) that I have something called dysthmia, a low level type of depression.

Keys to lifting depression, in my case:

1. Daily physical exercise (IN THE MORNING). You have to do it in the morning to experience the benefits during that day.
2. Drink loads of water. This really helps, and it's so easy that most people overlook it as a solution.
3. Positive social activity. Ideally, you should be laughing with someone at least once a day.
4. Appreciation for what you have. Every morning, state out loud three things you appreciate about your life.

While I'm at it, have any Twoismers experienced workplace depression?

I also do those things. One thing I would say is a key for me is just waiting. It's a little hard because no one wants to *feel* depressed but I find if I wait it out a few days, it will pass.

All sound advice, Saturdayindex - I'd add eating well to that list.

Interesting you should mention workplace depression; I think I've skirted very close to that before. I think I'd have suffered more if my outside-of-work attitude wasn't so very upbeat to counter work-based misery.

It's 3 and 4 I'm lacking and that seem to be making me feel kind of down a lot. I walk a hell of a lot and go to Tae Kwon Do classes, and drink a fair amount of water -- but I'm on my own for a lot of the day (back at the family home after university, most of my friends from here have moved on, so I'm feeling really lonely right now) and I often sort of appreciate what I do have, but I'm also under pressure to try and get my own life and to get a job and to find a way out of my hometown.

Anyone got any advice for a dude like myself who has a tendency to get feeling miserable and hopeless a lot in his early twenties? I could possibly use some.

Not suffering from depression myself, at least, i don't think i am. I do however have to suffer with the anxiety that comes with social interactions, my problem is that my mind goes totally blank, and therefore can't think of anything proper to say, which ultimately leads to the awkward silence.
