HELP with Chinook bass/melody

So, I decided to make a remix of Chinook, and it's been pretty difficult so far. I'm using Logic. I pretty much have the intro percussion down. You know that, boom-tap-boom-tap-boom. I also reversed and stretched the snare, to make that snapping noise. Well... uh... that's pretty much all I have so far. I've been trying to figure out the notes for the bass, and can not find anything that sounds close. Why? Are they a chord? Is it just the way the synth is made? So, I figured you guys might be able to steer me in the direction I need. What are the notes for that growly bassline? And also, any tips for the beat I'm gonna have to do, that comes at the end of the song is also appreciated.

I'm a pretty bad synthesist. But the bass synth that's playing is either a 7th pad, or has a bump in the harmonics to bring out the 7th.

Wow. Does not sound anything like it. Anybody else use logic? Any recommendations for instruments/presets?

It also seems like there are 17 notes in the bassline, right before it repeats with the snares coming in.

Well, I get the same notes. Though I'd put it like this:

B1 D2 A#1 G1 E2

A# just because midi notes don't do flats.

Copying a synth sound is the devil's own work. All I can suggest ( not knowing Logic) is to use a 3 osc analogue virtual mono synth, find a preset near and tweak from there.

Had another go at this. I'm terrible at driving Massive so there's a lot wrong, the attack on the notes is all wrong for one. But the sound's getting there I think

The pad is 2 oscillators

Osc1: Square-Saw1 Wt-pos:0.36 Amp:100% F1-F2:100% to filter 1
Osc2: Pitch: +19 Square-Saw1 Wt-pos:1.0 Amp:70% F1-F2:100% to filter 1
Filter1: Lowpass 2 Cutoff: 0.59 Resonance: 0.53
LFO5: Rate 0.67 Sent as pitch modulation to Osc1+2 at 0.16 and a smidge sent to Filter1 Cutoff
And chuck in some reverb

Edit: Also, at these settings I was an octave down on what BunnyRabbit posted.

Yep, depends on the patch really as you can usually adjust the octave of each osc. Probably is down from what I said as well because I was guessing the octave a bit after quickly trying it on SynthStation on my phone.

That patch is sounding good. I'd dial back the modulation a bit and maybe slow its rate down too.

The good thing about covers that I've found is that they help you learn your gear whilst not having to worry about being totally creative all the time. But you have to decide how far you're willing to go in pursuit of the exact sound you're after. You may get stuck this sound, so I'm counselling: find a good patch for the job and make a cover not an exact recreation.

Thanks for that! I haven't tried it yet, but thanks for putting it into MIDI/piano roll terms. When I look stuff up, and it's in guitar tabs (like some BoC stuff is on the web), I have NO IDEA how to do it.

Ah, that sounds pretty close! Very nice!

I know there are a billion of other songs to cover/remix, but damn I love Chinook! LOVE IT! The bass, the beat... my favorite BoC song. Hands down.

yea saw that, its pretty neat innit? i almost bought a future retro 777 years back, theyre the most sought after and preferred to the revolution model.
