Whenever the album comes up in discussion (pretty much never) it gets way too much shit. It's just a completely solid album in my opinion.

Then again, I may just be weird. For example, I thought 'War Stories' was damn great.

I'm of the opinion that Odelay is neck and neck with Mellow Gold, they each have something the other lacks.

they're both 10/10 records, but Mellow Gold has absolutely no focus, it shambles, and takes random tangents mid song, which is part of the reason it's so good, but it's also the kind of record I can't take 100% seriously.

Odelay has better song writing and overall coherency, but lacks a little bit of the fun and in your face brashness of Mellow Gold.

Jack Ass is Beck's best song though, and it's one of the top 10 best songs of all time.

As somebody who bought Mellow Gold at the time, I remember feeling like there was nothing like it.

It was rough, ready, but bursting with attitude. Combine that with the fact that most of the songs were just demo quality recorded on a 4-track, and I was completely in awe.

So it edges Odelay in my opinion, mostly just because it came first.

In the 90s, I was at the age where I could get totally immersed in my enthusiasm for music. There was nothing else to care about with such unadulterated and unbridled passion.

Then life happens to a degree whereby it is impossible to like anything quite so much, no matter how good it may be, boc or not.

I'd like to second Psyence Fiction and Loveless

As a drummer, Tool's Aenima has had a profound effect on my approach.

Also,

Mogwai's Young Team
Porcupine Tree's Stupid Dream

Wow guys! This is a great list! It's difficult to compare old artists to BoC that you like more (we are all here because we love BoC so much). I've really struggled to come up with more "electronic" arists that have been more influentual. I didn't want want break into rock genre's, so I will leave my original post as is. Old Aphex and Global Communications were good suggestions.
I remember loving Sabres of Paradise back in the day.

Mellow Gold is one absolutely amazing album.
Agreed! I recorded a cover or that album onto tape a couple of years back.
Let's hear it!
Oh man, I wish I had it. I sent it in the post but forgot to weigh it and my friend received my letter but no tape :( When I get back home I'm gonna try do a kind of sequel and record One Foot In The Grave or Mutations onto Audacity or something. I dare not take on odelay, haha.

Me too. Forgot I had it.
I get mixed up between endtroducing and Howie B's " turn the dark off " which is kinda similar and another that i should've mentioned.
